General questions

This is my first time, so go easy on my lame questions. Btw, I'm using the MMGG guide. And I'm going to be growing the B+ strain.
Ok, today I went out and bought 1 kg of brown rice flour, 7 kg's of Vermiculite, 7 kg's of perlite, and a heating pad that is probably about 1 1/4' by 1 1/4'.
Ok, now I couldn't find any half pint jars since I live in Canada, so I was wondering if 250 ml widemouth jars will be fine?
Also, i'm not sure these are tapered, but I don't have much choice since just about every store has sold out of there jars months ago. So, I was wondering if using non tapered widemouth jars would be fine? The opening is the same size as the whole jar.
Ok, now my terrarium, I was thinking of using a large cooler, or a large tupperware container. How should I apply my heatblanket to it?
What is all this talk of birdseed?
I was reading another thread, and he was talking about taping the holes, what is this about? The MMGG mentions nothing of this.
Now, I'm going to be keeping these in my closet, so how would I go about sterilizing it? Is it needed?
And last question, I need a simple way to give my mushies light. I was thinking of hanging a nightlight or maybe a growing light a few meters above the terrarium, and set it on a timer for 3 or so hours a day..
Any suggestions at all would be apprieciated, I want everything to go smoothly.
Also, how long tipically does it take for the whole process of growing these? And how much does it yeild if done properly? Approx.
Thanks a ton dudes!

250 ml is just slightly larger than 1/2 pint anyway, so you'll be fine. Tapered jars are preferred but not entirely necessary since the substrate will shrink considerably when it is fully colonized.
Apply your heat source to the top or side of the container so that the humidity will be easier to control.
Birdseed is for another day..It is easy and has good yields, but stick to what you've studied up on for now, PF or MMGG teks.
Tape the holes during sterilization, innoculation and for the first week to two weeks of colonization. The primary reason to do this is that no steam or boil-over makes its way into the substrate during sterilization(especially if you are pressure cooking) and as an extra barrier of protection while the mycelia takes up home inside the jars after innoculation.
Clean the growing area well and don't be shy with the Lysol; Heppa filters are an added benefit to keeping the air clean. Yes, modest precautions are needed at the very least.
Ambient light(non-directional, 'everwhere' light) is more than sufficient. i.e. indirect sunlight..
the process will take an average of 30 days...As a beginner, expect 4-6 dried grams per cake(or per cased cake)..
Good Luck

I think you mean NON-tapered jars are preferred

No, actually I do mean tapered...meaning that the opening is wider than the body of the jar.

Tapered means that it gets smaller as it goes

Exactly.
Non-tapered would mean uniform in shape...

tapered jars have a larger mouth and smaller bottom, which makes them ideal since cakes slide out easier.

OOPS! I was thinking of tapered as in a jelly jar where it gets smaller as it goes up, not bigger at the top. Sorry for the posts.
