Microwaves will dry out your substrate and render it useless. Although some microwave sterilization teks have surfaced in the past few years i high recommend against not using them. A boiling pot of water will suffice. Put water 1/2 way up the jars and boil rapidly for 20 minutes and quietly for 40 minutes. Tips:

1. Have something seperate the bottom of the jars from the bottom of the pot.
2. Make sure the water doesnt boil rapidly and get into the jars.

Metal lids + microwaves = cool light show. If you all haven't tried filling a mug with water and putting a lightbulb in it (metal end in the water, glass end above top of mug) you should. It glows green and purple and all kinds of crazy colors. Be warned though, I told a buddy to try this and he broke his Grandma's microwave. But if you only try it for a second you should be ok. Just don't trip out and forget about it in there for 10 minutes.

"Metal lids + microwaves = cool light show"
not if there is something to absorb the waves i.e. substrate. metal reflects waves. if you put just metal in a micro you get sparks same as if you put nothing in a micro
