microwave sterilisation
    #345751 -

Does anyone have any info on sterilising using a microwave for jars of 250ml water and 250ml/500ml verm. substrates?? Ive done it with water for eight minutes - is this enough, and with the substrate, it explodes all the time - any suggestions?

Stck to pressure cooking. Im a microbiologist and I once microwaved a flask of nutrient broth for 12 minutes and within 2 days I could see bacterial contaminants. Better to avoid any chance of contamination not just to avoid losing jars but because contaminats can put you in the hospital and/or give you cancer.

Put you in the hospital....ok I've seen this one. But give you cancer? On what basis do you make this statement? Infectious forms of cancer are caused by Hepatitis viruses, HPV, but I've not heard of any fungus causing cancer.

Carcinogens would come from fungal contaminants. Many common fungi produce a class of toxins known as 'aphlatoxins'. These are not only toxic in the traditional sense but when consumed in small amounts repeatedly they can cause cancer of the oesophagus and mouth (aphlatoxins are often present in peanut butter). In some areas of South Africa, contamination of maize meal by fungi producing aphlatoxins has resulted in locally elevated levels of oesophageal cancer making it the most prevalent form of cancer after cervical cancer ( HPV in woman only) in these areas.

So what does this 'mean'? Should I cut peanut butter (mmmmmm
pnut butter) corn and mushrooms out of my diet or simply just
don't eat anything with a slimy green growth hanging off of it?
Also do you mean ALPHAtoxin? Thanks for looking out for our

Right...sorry I forgot about Aspergillus, and it's pesky liver ca causing aflatoxin. (Micro was a couple of years ago). Thanks for clearing that up. I'm not able to access my internet resources from home, so I'll ask you this out of convenience....is aflatoxin heat labile? Just wondering if making tea helps prevent exposure....

Thanks

Ermmm... I must be honest and say that i dunno about heat stability of aflatoxins. I normally dont get any nausea from tea though so it prolly does help to denature some nasties. I'll see if I can find out though... tis an interesting question.

Nope, tis aphla(or afla?)toxins. pnut butter is prolly the most oft contaminated foodstuff but considering how much is eaten on a daily basis and how few cases of poisoning are actually reported I guess its pretty safe, depends on how much you dig the stuff! (i hate it). Dont eat anything with mould onit.

This is concerning.....I also did a pub-med seach, and it seems to survive (at least in part) microwaving and boiling. Doesnt' sound great for our livers. Hopefully since you don't eat this stuff daily, and it is in much reduced quantities than seen in 3rd world countries, we'll be OK.
