Submersible Heater
    #449535 - 11/06/01 09:04 PM (23 years, 1 month ago)

ok my friend has a 50 w submersible heater he wanted to use with his 10 gal terrarium.. right now he has it in a snapple bottle, but there are some problems..
for one thing, it isn't heating the terrarium very well.. it is getting real hot without anything else heating up.. should he try a bigger bottle? also, can the water get too hot?? could it boil if he leaves it turned up too high? poor guy is really having trouble with this thing if anyone can give him some tips on how to use the fishtank heater better it'd be much appreciated..

I used something simular in my icubation chamber. I took a tupperware container and cut a hole in the side. I then put the water heater in the hole and sealed it with silicone and put the lid on. It will keep the temp. inside what ever I need it, just adjust the heater control. Now this incub. chamber is a cooler so I don't know if that is the only reason it holds the heat. But for the cooler it works great.

my friend thinks he solved the problem.. he buried the jar in the middle of his perlite tray, this seems to warm the entire tray and in turn the terrarium a lot better!

hmm well either you aren't using your heater efficiently or you have a huge area to heat because my friend's $9 50 w (also only partially) submersible heater can keep a 10 gal terrarium at 84 no problem. try thinking of ways to have the heater heat a larger body of water (ie stick the jar in the middle of a perlite tray)

thanks for the tip micron, i turned it down.. thought that if the little light went off, it wasn't heating and obviously couldn't get any warmer.. heh wrong
