Waiting for colonization

Is waiting till the whole jar essential? Im wondering because Im going on vacation and Id like to have shrooms for the trip. I have 2 weeks till I leave. One of the two jars is connecting the very bottom together. While the other is working on getting to the bottom. These jars have been colonizing for over a month. Its real cold all the time. And I dont grasp how much that effects the colonization. After their colonized or if I find out I don't neccessarily need to wait, ill be doing a casing in the poor man's terrarium. So im not sure if I can remove the bottom area or that leads to infection. Also does the poor man's terrarium have enough humidity when you air it twice a day? Ill have the terrarium in light for 6 hours a day. But i dont know if it will be warm enough. As its nearing winter and my room is cold!! Does anyone have any ideas to make the jars warmer, and about the terrarium if its a good way to do it. Also If its wise or not to take the cakes out prematurely. -sygma

Place the jars under a light with black sheet or towel over them. Keep an eye to make sure they don't get to warm. I hate to tell you this but I doubt your going to have shrooms for your vacation man.

Would it be safe to leave the jars by themselves for 3 more weeks until then? Like after the jars become colonized can i still keep it in the jar? Maybe to strengthen it further or something? Because from now till when i get back, its 3 weeks. And i would definately like to try my hand at fruiting my first attempt at growing mushrooms. thanks for the reply mrshrum -sygma

if they're growing that slow, you could probably be all right leaving them. i similarly went on vacation as my first ever jars were finishing up colonizing. the faster jar must have been left in the jar for 10 days fully colonized. maybe it will affect the number of flushes i'll get (used up nutrients), but those two jars are in a casing and are pinning like crazy right now!

You got 5 weeks from today right till you get back... I'm no expert on this but you could possibly put them in a closet or someplace cool say 60-65 degrees to slow down colinization some. Then before you leave them someplace where they can get some indirect sunlight if possible and make sure your lids are on loose so they can get some oxygen. If you do that my guess would be that when you get back from vacation you'll have shrooms ready to eat grown invitro. Never done it myself but if you search for invitro on the site you'll probably find some good teks with more precise info.
