Sony "Nightshot"
    #4486977 - 08/02/05 08:41 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

I love this feature. My video camera and my digital stills camera are both Sony. And both have this feature. It shoots in infared. You can take pictures in complete darkness. This picture of me was taken in a pitch-black room (looking in a mirror). My face is lit up with a TV remote control (which obviuosly uses infared light).

Its a great way to take pictures of unsuspecting subjects in dark environments!

Yeah, I remember your filter. Looked like an opaque piece of black glass. But isn't the camera still picking up infared light even without a filter? If not then how come I can use a TV remote as a 'flashlight'? I thought the filter just did not let anything but infared light pass through (natural light also appears in your shots in Nightshot mode).

it still picks up and displays the infrared light but it's the entire spectrum, what the sony cameras do is it removes a device called a 'hot mirror filter', all digital cameras have one in order to filter out UV and IR waves that interfere
with the CCD imager. your cameras should have IR LEDs built in

So essentialy I had it right. In nightshot mode the camera allows you to pick up the infared spectrum along with the visible light. Your IR filter blocks out visible light and only allows infared to get through.

And yes, the cameras have IR LEDs also. Just didn't use it in the pic above.

yeah, I guess I spoke too soon...

anyway, if you pick up about 10 or 15 IR LEDs you can make a spotlight thats good for about 150 feet at night
