This thread is rad. Of what goes down in the deep none can speak. Truly there are thousands of undiscovered life forms in the oceans of the world. There are probably chemicals in depths that no one knows about. Perhaps the 6th element, the dopamine of the sea dragons brain, to cure the world of scourge.

Since this relates...

A pretty knowledgable friend was telling me how they found some crazy chemical in some sort of deep sea snail or something.  He told me what the snail uses this chemical for, but I can't quite remember.  I think it might simply be for defense.  Anyway, he talked about what this chemical does.

He said it somehow stops communication between cells/organisms.  I guess, from what he says, it's starting to be hailed as a "cure all" type drug.  It supposedly has great promise to stop cancer and the spread of viruses and whatnot...a pretty broad spectrum of sicknesses...since it can stop the cells from communicating and whatnot.

I might have things fairly jumbled up(bad memory), but that's the jist of it.  I haven't done a search for it yet.  Anyone hear of this?

By the way, those pics are rad.  I have always totally thought of those creatures at those deep depths to be true aliens.  hehe, "The Abyss" style

I read about that sea snail as well, it's in one of my scientific america magazines... definitely cool stuff. They're going to use it in human testing soon as a pain killer. Definitely cool shit.

The deep sea seems almost extraterrestrial. Less than 5% of the ocean floor's flora and fauna has been checked into. There's crazy fucking shit down there. Makes me want to seriously consider working in marine biology.

There's shit loads of coral reef with chemicals that we haven't seen anywhere else before. People are taking small samples, and reproducing them in labs to see which sorts of medicinal benifits may become of them (And so we don't have to sacrifice lots of endangered reef). Then you have fish that can photosynthesize light from small heat ducts at the bottem of the ocean floor where there's no visible light.... god damn. Too fucking interesting.

Only about 1% of the Amazon Rainforest's plant and animal life has been analyzed by scientists. And yet it's already almost half gone.

just some snippets from one of the links. It's a first time for me reading these...

"One toxin was discovered to block calcium channels that are the key to transmitting impulses from pain nerves to the spinal cord. Morphine has a similar effect, albeit indirectly, and Miljanich, then at the University of California, decided to test it as a medication.

Though more powerful than morphine, Prialt is not addictive, and users do not build up tolerance to it, Miljanich said. But there can be serious side effects, including dizziness, nausea and confusion, and it is reserved for those with severe, chronic pain."

It's so cool to think what we HAVEN'T found yet. It's incredible how nature benefits ALL in one way or another!

I know. It really irks me as well, especially when you consider it's human greed that's responsible..... :mad2:

Especially when you also consider that most of our food originates from the rainforest, as do most of the Earth species call it home. Not to even mention the ecological balance that millions and millions of acres of lush vegetation and trees provides the entire Earth.
