All else equal, Y does BRF fruit but not rye??
    #443682 - 10/31/01 09:46 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

FOAF cased about 20 pie tins, all from multispore. About 6 were standard 2 X 1/2 pint PF jars innoculated with EQ spores cased with coco fiber with no bottom layer. All other conditions remaining the same, the other 14 were 2 X 1 pint rye grain jars with no bottom layer cased with coco fiber. After about 2 weeks in my terrarium, the BRF are fruiting like mad, but the rye is stalled. What is the deal???

Does the extra verm in the BRF allow for easier fruiting? Is my rye too dry? Please help, FOAF seems to be stuck at the frustrating stage of PF jars, something stupid is holding him back. Any ideas?

I am casing a bunch of rye tonight but adding a bottom layer of verm to see if it helps. Why is rye harder to fruit than BRF??

Can't say for sure, but the rye shoud have shown good vigor in comparison to the PF. Is the casing layer moist? It should be.

I am experiencing the exact same thing right now with my casings. I have 1 casing using whole brown rice and another 5 with rye all topped with coir. The brown rice casing I just pulled off numerous big fruits tonight but the rye are lagging with either only a couple of fruits in a few casings or a bunch of stalled out smaller fruits.
This is my first time using rye and I was tottaly hyped about seeing the major difference it would make but so far the rice is kicking it's ass.
If you find any help with this question let me know.

It definately fruits very well on rye. That's the only way I do it and I know many other people do too. The single biggest problem with rye is that it getting contaminated by bacteria in the jars. But if you've got to the casing point without it getting contam'd then I don't know why it doesn't fruit. Maybe there is a small amount of contamination?

I think it must be hidden contams somewhere. The same exact shit happened to my friend. He is practically a pro at casing/cooking (or so he thought) but all his pins have the veil open before they're over 1/2". They all just stop growing prematurely. Are you doing one step rye cooking or soaking/simmering? I think the one step method does not work for rye.... my friend is going to try the soak/simmer with verm added to the rye to see how that goes over.

Moisture contents most definitely play a major in this hobby or as lemunhed said possible contams.
