Help me convince an old man that not all new music is soulless
    #4419641 - 07/18/05 03:23 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

So the other night I got trashed with my dad and we ended up talking about music.

We talked about the greats - dylan, pink floyd, jimi, the rolling stones etc etc. He gave me the usual "music peaked in the 60s, modern music has lost its way" monologue. Trouble is, I had some difficulty disagreeing with this. Alot of the music in my collection is from around that era. And it's hard to watch the woodstock movie and not feel envious.

Do you think the music of today will be remembered in thirty years time?

Now my plan is to make a compilation cd of music released in the last 10 years to show the old man that music is still good.

What, in your opinion, are some examples of the best music of the last ten years?

The Lateralus or AEnema albums by Tool. Granted, I've never gotten into the music of the 60s-70s, so I don't know how that'd go over with him. Still, I'd say there was just as much mindless shit being pumped out during those decades as now. It's only with the perspective of time do we see what actually had resonance.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Tepid Peppermint Wonderland

I guess the most appropriate label would be neo psychedelia, they are heavily influenced by the 60's so your dad would like em.

Well yeah, music was very good from that era, but it can't stay the same forever. Music evolves. Just because it changes doesn't mean it isn't good anymore.

There are plenty of bands that are amazing and great that have made music in the past years that can compare to music of the 60's. I mean really, doesn't it sound a bit irrational to say something like "There will NEVER be a better band than The Doors" or "There will NEVER be a better band that the Beatles" ?
Who's to say what band is better than another anyway? It's all a matter of taste.

Get a copy of BT's track Firewater. It's from one of his CDs ESCM.

Also try Hybrid's CD Wider Angle.

There is so much music that it was not possable to make in the 60s that is being made today. Alot, you're father just doesn't know where to look.

There aren't any less talented people now, and Ideas travel WAY faster over the internet you know...

Garaj Mahal, Steve Kimock Band, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, and Sound Tribe Sector 9. That will do it.

I couldn't think of anything so I went to random on my media player and it went straight to pink floyd - any colour you like... so I have to listen till it's over now and I'll follow up with some suggestions afterward.
It's my fav song sorry...

and definitely get him to check out Mars Volta they've got many good songs, but my fav is Cicatriz, it has the helicopter from pinkfloyd's the wall.
