black flag-my war. Really changed the face of punk and set the bar higher
Kraftwerk-Trans-Europe Express. Influenced a lot of early hip-hop.

my bad, I thought I read "changed the face of rock" not music. that make this a whole different thread then.
how about what shpongle has been doing?
eminem (not a fan, but it did stir some shit up)
or how about the way soundtribe sector nine has expanded the confines of jam music, or the way STI's album "untying the Knot" destroyed the conception that jam bands could not recreat thier magic in the studio?
And The postal service, damn.

#1- Pet Sounds...
good stuff out of curiosity, do you like smile?
I did, but a bunch of people didnt, because they were comparing it to smiley smile. I think Smile (the entire concept) has the greatest openning ever.
But as far as "changing the face of music", it is hands down Pet Sounds. It is the sole inspiration for Sgt. Peppers and a multitude of pre-rock bands.
Actually according to the Beatles the Zappa album Freak Out was a definite part of the inspiration for Sgt. Peppers.
And I like Smiley Smile, I think its a realy good and bizzare album.
Could you perhaps go into details about this or share references? I always love hearing what the Beatles thought about other artists in the 60's, but it's so hard to find info on the subject. I've never heard them mention Frank Zappa, so I'm really curious. I can see how Freak Out would influence them, because it was so different for 1966. Thanks for any info you can share
On the topic of the thread, I think Donovan's 'Sunshine Superman' lp had a big impact in England. In 1966 it was very ahead of it's time, but unfortunately it wasn't released in America until 1967, after Are You Experienced, Disraeli Gears, and Sgt. Pepper had been released. I know the Stones and Beatles were influenced by Sunshine Superman though.

i know I am in a slim minority around here, but I have to say that Prince Paul's Prince Among Theives changed music for me, at least the production side of it all.
Other than that, Wu-tang probably changed music the most for me, and plenty others worldwide. (not to mention, prince paul is wu-fam).
not to say I don't have pretty much ever CCR album on vinyl among others, but im from a different generation.

Not sure about some of the above, but here are a few I think actually did change the face of music:
- Low (David Bowie) - The Velvet Underground & Nico - Combination of: Autobahn, Radio-Activity, Trans-Europe Express, The Man Machine (Kraftwerks early albums)
Have to agree that Loveless is an awesome album - pity the shoegazers got steamrolled by the grunge movement.

I'm also trying to think which album it was that pushed rap-music into the mainstream of American pop culture. About the earliest rap album I can think of that was popular was Run DMC's self titled album in '84. There are earlier examples but this was the first one I remember being big. Am I missing one?
Can't say I've a great knowledge of rap, but I think Grandmaster Flash also helped kickstart this style...?
