Crazy jars
    #441704 - 10/30/01 09:55 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

about 2 weeks ago I started 12 jars with the equadorian strain, This is the first time i've done this and was very surprised to see that the cakes were 80% colonised after a little over a week (is this normal). Today is arround 2 weeks after and although most are 90-95% colonised, i'm having trouble with a few. One of them feels heavier than the others; the BRF and Verm have gone a dark colour; but the contents smell distinctly mushroomy; the mycelium is pressed up tight against the glass, and the mycelium has a slight yellow tinge right at the bottom of the cake. I've sepreated this one from all the others and want to know whether to throw it away or not? Now, some of my other cakes have started to grow long strands of mycelium up to the dry verm layer on top and i dont know if this is normal, or what i should do if it's not, also there are what looks like jellified water droplets on the side of most of the jars.....is this normal too? I would really apreciate any help.........
.thanks

It's all good, Harry. The heavy jar might have gotten wet from the boiling. The yellow is nothing to worry about, unless it's a bright yellow.Normal, normal, normal.

how about all the mycelium strands growing into the top layer of verm, in some jars the mycelium is consuming the whole top layer: what do i do when I birth the cakes? just scrape the top off both the verm AND the mycelium strands?, surely that would do a lot of damage?
