I got into radiohead after hearing Brad Mehldau (ridiculous jazz pianist) cover a lot of tunes- he must have covered paranoid android on 3 different albums. I think paranoid android is one of the most amazing rock songs ever- up there with some of the great beatles tracks. But, more recently I've been listening to Kid A. "How to Disappear Completely" is possibly the most unearthly song I've ever heard. The way it starts with that high string discord and then the guitar major chord then that repeating baseline, then his voice. Unreal. Listen to it high if you haven't before- it is unbelievable.

I've had the bends and ok computer in my cd player in my car for about 4 months straight... for some reason I haven't gotten tired of it.. even though I've been listening to those albums for years.

I've been on a radiohead kick since late winter and for some reason it hasn't faded.. usually i got on month long kicks and it's over.. time to move onto something else in my collection

yeah man kid_a was so unpredictable but thats why its my fav. You ever notice how most radiohead fans say "ok computer" is there fav, but the really hardcore fans are all about kid_a?

hahaha, just caught this as i was reading back over. i totally understand, and i hear it alot. people who say ok computer is their favorite dont truly understand what radiohead is about. kid A was an expression of the psyhcedelic subconcious. shit, just look at what goes through your head when you trip on psychdelics listening to kid A (cept for optimistic, the pop song of kid a), its fucking incredible.

but hey, its better people like ok computer than sphongle or some other rave music.

P.S> pm'd you.

Actually I have always found serious music fans to prefer OK Computer. Kid A is quite brilliant, and I like it a lot. But, in comparison to OK Computer, I would say it isnt quite up to that level. OK Computer is so densely layered, taking many many listens to be able to hear all the intricate sounds that they throw in at odd moments, the weird background instruments, operating on different rhythms sometimes then the foreground song. Listen to the first song off of OK Computer, there is a lot going on there, that isnt noticeable from the get go. They have multiple melody lines going on that arent obvious at all. Many of the various melody lines they throw in, remind of a Debussy piano piece. I am not saying that Radiohead is as brilliant as Debussy, but with his piano pieces, there is a lot of notes that he will throw in at odd rhythms and odd points, that are deffinately not noticeable the first listen, but add to the overal mood none the less. With Kid A I find that this is not the case as it was with OK Computer, I still think it is an enjoyable listen, but ultimately not quite as lush and detailed as I would like. I dont want to sound like I am trying to claim that Kid A is not a good album, as like I have probably stated too many times, I enjoy it a lot. But I think it is more of an electronic pop piece that doesnt have the depth of OK Computer. Before you respond to me otherwise, listen to OK Computer on a nice set of headphones, then Kid A, as I have just done, (Grado SR-125's.) If you still disagree then I would actually love to argue this on a song by song basis, as I really enjoy dissecting Radiohead.

I would argue that Radiohead IS on par with Debussy.
The orchestration is so rich, precise, and natural. I think that Radiohead, and the like, is as much an extension of the orchestral tradition as it is rock. The forms are not as rigid and repetative as they are in most rock. I love how the melody and guitar riffs often evolve each time a theme/bass line repeats. They're use of electronic sound is different from most other groups.. I love Medeski, Martin and Wood, and they use a lot of electronic sound (mosly analog, unlike RH) and it is quite inventive, but it doesn't have that feeling of preciseness and natural evocation that Radiohead has. The sounds aren't ear candy- they color the songs in definite ways.

If you've listened to modern classical music lately, you'll realize that a lot of it doesn't go anywhere- it isn't beautiful- it's esoteric- visit a university classical composition department. So where are today's musical geniuses? I think they're everywhere, including jazz and rock. To me, rock has the potential to handle the classical posterity. The emphasis is on melody, intricate sound. Jazz is a different world altogether.

The first time I heard 'Hail to the Thief' I was really disappointed.

I figured I'd give it another try, so I set my lil piece of shit stereo on the toilet and jumped into the bathtub for a good soak. I dunno the mechanics of it, but in my teeny tiny bathroom it sounded incredible. I must have listened to it a thousand times after that. My fingers were pruny for months.

I saw Radiohead live for the Hail to the Theif tour.  Best show I've ever seen.  When they played the song "You and Whose Army?" the Camera Zoomed in very closely on Thom York's face. He played the piano while looking dirrectly into the camera that was displayed on enormous screens.  It was incredibly intimate and every person in the audience felt as if he was speaking directly to them.  Especially when he pointed at us as and sang "YOU drive me crazy, well come on, come on.." It couldn't have been a better show.

:inlove:
