Re: 1% of TV "white noise" is light from the big bang [Re: freddurgan]
    #4393563 -

Actually we can see the spot where the big bang took place.

If by "spot" you mean "everywhere, all around us", then yes.

There was no "spot" in the Universe where the Big Bang took place.

The Universe is the spot, and it is currently taking place

prove to me that the "big bang" took place.

not show me where a spot might be because it might of happend... i want proof.

white noise on the other hand may exist..but once again none of you can prove it's from some big bang.

thats all...it's like me saying that this whit noise is leftover static from God rubbing a balloon in his hair.
it's possible, but not proveable..it's theory.

how do "they" know what it is and where it's from for sure?

Because these scientists know more about this stuff then you do, and then they tell US about it because it's interesting. You don't have to believe it. Be ignorant. That's fine.

I was always under the impression that white noise was all audible frequencies played at a level relative to the logarithmic curve of our perception of sound. We perceive the lower end of the frequency spectrum with a decrese in dB, and to make up for this, to make white noise, you have to boost the lower end so that every frequency/octave "seems" to be equal.
Pink Noise however is certin octaves pulled out, but the frequencies are actually all equal, so the low end seems quieter.

Then again , I could have them backwards, I havent read anything about psychoacoustics in years.

The big bang was an explosion of space, not an explosion in space.

Well in this case "white noise" simply refers to "noise" in a system.

You are correct that, when speaking of audio frequencies, "white noise" is a well defined phenomena. However the term "white noise" is also understood to simply mean "noise"...and we aren't discussing audio noise here but EM noise.

yes, white noise is also sometimes referred to any noise which is multiple frequencies independant of each other and completely random.... like the noise at a party even.

nothing can be proved, we can only provide logical explanations. the big bang is the most logical explanation for the origin of the microwave background. if you have a better explanation, i'd like to hear it.

if you're searching for absolute proof (of anything), your search is futile.

no, its nothing like that, since there is nothing that you can observe, no evidence whatsoever to support that theory. yes, that is a theory, but its a completely unfounded theory.

provide a valid mechanism for how that might work, and then it would be a valid theory (although still not as good a theory as the big bang). anyone can pull random crap out of their ass, but some people actually think about things and come up with logical explanations.

they don't, but all observable evidence points to it coming from the big bang.

Yea seriously. It's like this weird movement by evangelicals to introduce the theory of intelligent-design into our schools. Their argument is that evolution and creation are both just theories. But this is a misnomer, as one tenent of a theory is that it has testable support to back it up. Intelligent-Design is what the science world would call a 'hunch.'

my parents are fundamentalist christians. i used to get it all the time when i lived with them. as a result i'm pretty well versed in creation 'arguments'. these people are like 'fuck science and logic, our irrational beliefs should be taught to everyone else'. i have no problem with religious people until they try to teach their faith as some sort of logical theory.

there is also the fact that no theory of intelligent design has ever been proposed. there are attacks and nitpicks at science, but no constructive theory offered by the creationists.

I really don't know a lot about the "big bang", as far as I knew it was a pretty flimsy theory, but it seems that there is a lot behind it that I don't know about.

Can you recommend any good books on the subject that describes the theory in-depth?

"A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking is always a good one to read, though it doesn't just stick to the Big Bang.
