1% of TV "white noise" is light from the big bang
    #4388682 -

So if you want to see the big bang, look at some white noise. I think that's pretty badass. It's just 1% but that's still a lot really, considering how long ago it happened.

its a well documented phenomena. big bang creates energy (electromagnetic radiation) which travels to other parts of the universe. by the time it reaches our part, its a few billion years in the future. tv ariel picks up microwave signals (electromagnetic radiation) and represents the signal with an image on the screen.

Actually it is possible to prove that this "white noise" exists, and it has been experimentally measured to a HIGH degree by several experimental satellites (COBE, WMAP) as well as ground-based and aerial detection.

The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), as it's called, did not originate with the Big Bang...but several hundred thousand years after the Big Bang. It's existence is the greatest proven evidence for the existence of a Big Bang-like event.

For the first few hundred thousand years ATB (after the bang) the Universe was opaque to radiation. It was too hot for atoms to form, so the Universe consisted of a large ball of plasma. Photons of radiation interact strongly with plasma because they are absorbed and re-emitted by electrons readily (the electrons are not bound to a proton, in a plasma). As the Universe expands, it cools down, so when it had expanded enough it cooled to the point where atoms could form. This freed the massive amount of radiation that existed at that point to STOP interacting with electrons and flow freely throughout space. The Universe became transparent to light (radiation).

It is this light, that was set free at that particular instant, which we can still detect as the CMB. In fact any direction you look in, you will find the CMB. It exists throughout all points in space because it was formed in all points in space almost simultaneously. (it does differ by a VERY small fraction in different patches of the sky - further evidence for the Big Bang model).

The radiation cools along with the Universe as it expands (the expansion causes a redshift of the photons) so it's current temperature is about 2.7 Kelvins with a frequency in the microwave range. This frequency and temperature was predicted by the Big Bang theory, which is why the CMB is such good evidence for a Big Bang.

If by "spot" you mean "everywhere, all around us", then yes.

There was no "spot" in the Universe where the Big Bang took place.

The Universe is the spot, and it is currently taking place

I was always under the impression that white noise was all audible frequencies played at a level relative to the logarithmic curve of our perception of sound. We perceive the lower end of the frequency spectrum with a decrese in dB, and to make up for this, to make white noise, you have to boost the lower end so that every frequency/octave "seems" to be equal.
Pink Noise however is certin octaves pulled out, but the frequencies are actually all equal, so the low end seems quieter.

Then again , I could have them backwards, I havent read anything about psychoacoustics in years.

Well in this case "white noise" simply refers to "noise" in a system.

You are correct that, when speaking of audio frequencies, "white noise" is a well defined phenomena. However the term "white noise" is also understood to simply mean "noise"...and we aren't discussing audio noise here but EM noise.

yes, white noise is also sometimes referred to any noise which is multiple frequencies independant of each other and completely random.... like the noise at a party even.

nothing can be proved, we can only provide logical explanations. the big bang is the most logical explanation for the origin of the microwave background. if you have a better explanation, i'd like to hear it.

if you're searching for absolute proof (of anything), your search is futile.

no, its nothing like that, since there is nothing that you can observe, no evidence whatsoever to support that theory. yes, that is a theory, but its a completely unfounded theory.

provide a valid mechanism for how that might work, and then it would be a valid theory (although still not as good a theory as the big bang). anyone can pull random crap out of their ass, but some people actually think about things and come up with logical explanations.

they don't, but all observable evidence points to it coming from the big bang.

Yea seriously. It's like this weird movement by evangelicals to introduce the theory of intelligent-design into our schools. Their argument is that evolution and creation are both just theories. But this is a misnomer, as one tenent of a theory is that it has testable support to back it up. Intelligent-Design is what the science world would call a 'hunch.'

my parents are fundamentalist christians. i used to get it all the time when i lived with them. as a result i'm pretty well versed in creation 'arguments'. these people are like 'fuck science and logic, our irrational beliefs should be taught to everyone else'. i have no problem with religious people until they try to teach their faith as some sort of logical theory.

there is also the fact that no theory of intelligent design has ever been proposed. there are attacks and nitpicks at science, but no constructive theory offered by the creationists.

I really don't know a lot about the "big bang", as far as I knew it was a pretty flimsy theory, but it seems that there is a lot behind it that I don't know about.

Can you recommend any good books on the subject that describes the theory in-depth?
