Left Tries Scare Tactics over Court Vacancy
by Josh Montez, correspondent

Sen. Barbara Boxer says women will die President Bush nominates a pro-life judge to the Supreme Court.

Five thousand women a year will die if President Bush nominates a pro-life judge to the Supreme Court ? that's the claim of liberal U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. And it's just a sample of the ramped-up rhetoric you can expect as Bush prepares to nominate a replacement for the retiring Sandra Day O'Connor.

Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, said Boxer's claim of 5,000 deaths, made to an Associated Press reporter, pure fantasy.

"Senator Boxer's reliance on such an urban legend doesn't do her any credit," he said. "Dr. Bernard Nathanson, who was one of the three founders the National Abortion Rights Action League, wrote a book some years ago in which he admitted he and the other early founders of NARAL had fabricated this figure."

Serrin Foster, president of Feminists for Life of America, said she wonders who's doing the senator's fact-checking.

"Whoever the staffer was that fed her this erroneous, unsubstantiated number needs to be fired," she said, "and Barbara Boxer needs to make a retraction."

Carrie Gordon-Earll, senior analyst for bioethics at Focus on the Family Action, said it's no surprise that the pro-abortion community is using Roe v. Wade as a panic button.

"There are no statistics to back up that type of inflammatory statement," she noted. "Very clearly, Senator Boxer is doing this to try to scare people into supporting a more liberal justice to the Supreme Court.

"If and when the court overturns Roe v. Wade, that merely sends . . . the abortion issue back to the states. It doesn't make abortion illegal in all 50 states."

I do not think it will be overturned.

But if Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court,

and it went back to the states to control the laws

WOULD 5,000 WOMEN DIE a year? or how many would die a year?

It's kind of hard to say, because medicine has changed since abortion has become legal. Based on what I've read, I'd estimate anywhere between 20 and 100 deaths in the US per year. 5000 is obviously a very outrageous number.

I am not a fan of abortion, and respect states rights. but roe v wade needs to stay. it would be crazy. I could see the state of Texas outlawing abortion and the woman having to drive to another state.

I wonder if bush can find a pro-state judge who may be against abortion but will not change the current law.

I'm not a big fan of it either, for multiple reasons. But yeah, there are many states that would outlaw it. And many women, particularly young ones, wouldn't have the means to travel outside of a large state, such as Texas. It would just be a colossal fuck up. I hope Bush begins opening his eyes to things other than Scripture.

> I am not a fan of abortion

I am 100% against abortion, personally... However, I would never take away the right for somebody else to decide their own moral values, especially in cases which involve their own body. When the country is split on something 50/50, it is our obligation to maintain freedom, swallow our pride, and allow others to do as they please.

> I hope Bush begins opening his eyes to things other than Scripture

Or at least begins to follow the examples set forth in Scripture... something that almost every Christian I know tends to ignore. Nobody can save me, but myself... and I must be given the freedom to make mistakes. Forcing a person to follow certain moral values does not instill those moral values into a person. More often than not, trying to force moral values upon others causes resentment towards the values being forced...

I think the world would end and then the ground would open up and Saddam Hussein and Satan would rise up from hell to rule the world for a millenia.
