Im almost out of rye. Since I dont want to mail order what other choices do I have? My local southern states store carries over ten types of bird seed. What seed should I stay away from for sure?

I hear finchseed is good, but i always see posts about problems with that. i went to the store to buy finchseed and their was all kinds of shit in it that just didn't seem ritght. So I bought some parakeet seed. It has the following: White Millet, Canary Seed, and Oats Groats....thats it. this stuff when used in the right manner, works great. I dodn't think i'll ever waste my time with anything else. Still learning about agar though :)

Alright, this is a definitely newbie post....When you use seed as a substrate like this, is it possible to birth the cakes like you would a brf cake, or is this only for planting into a larger set-up? I started some brf cakes, my first a couple of days ago, and i was thinking about using dark rye or birdseed in the rest of my jars.... thanks a lot

Fiddler-4U I'd like to know how you prepared that Parakeet seed before you put it in the innoculation jars. Did you boil it or grind it up? Do you pressure cook the stuff? Just curious. I've heard that White Millet and Rye are a good combo, any ideals about that? For P.Cubie's that is.
My neighbors Parakeet wants to try using his food to grow shrooms so he will have a little company in his cage. 8^)

Purrr.

You can always use white or brown rice . It is everywhere and not much money.Use it as spawn or use it as
substrate. Use it as both.

Yes, brown rice is everywhere. Use that. Just grind it into a powder with a blender, food processor, or a coffee grinder. If you want to try other grains, you should be able to find wheat berries and rye berries at health food stores and co-ops, and you may even find millet there too. I've even grown successfully with barley.
