can I chop small amounts of dry straw up with a food processor without destroying anything? Has anyone tried this?

I would think that would be fine. Are you using it for jars? Or for a bulk grow?

use a coffee grinder, I use it to grind up weed stems for honey oil, it works good, but you should still be able to use a food processor or blender too. just do small amounts at a time.

use scisors or if you have one, a garden shredder. Or a weed wacker (strimmer) in a black bin. Even a lawn mower with a collection boxworks well, depends how much.
its going to fuck your food processor if you have a lot to do.

Agreed. I tried this before and it didn't even chop it. It basically just sucked the straw in and tangled up in the blades. Wheat straw is tough stuff! Perhaps soaking it well in water before hand will soften it up enough to use the processor, but I never tried it again...

If you have em in your garage already you can use hedge-trimmers. The electric kind with lots of teeth like a comb. It is easier to control the amount of cutting you do,unlike a weedwacker which IME is easy to thrash the hell out of the straw too much. Not that the weedwacker doesnt work or anything its just a little less furious with a hedgetrimmer. You do the same with it as the trimmer, just put it in a bin and work it over until the straw is cut into 1-3" pieces and your good to soak and pasteurize.
