Breaking up dung, can one use blender or something??
    #1223731 - 01/16/03 01:24 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

i have a friend who likes to break up his dung before pasteurizing so it's fine and powdery like. However this process is a pain in the arse. He was wondering if it would be possible to use a blender, food processor, etc. to grind up the dung into a fine powder. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!!

I think a food processor or blender would take forever unless you are doing really small casing.  Maybe try a mulcher?  My friend has excellent results just breaking it up as good as possible with his hands.

It's a good idea because if there are hard chunks of dung in ur bulk substrate, they won't get colonized inside and out like powdery dung will. He's just had good results this way. But hard dry chunks of dung are a real hassle to break up. So he was looking for an easier way. Surely someone has to have encountered this same situation.

If you pastuerize your poo then go to use it as a bulk substrate why dont you just put some gloves on and break it up by hand when you are spawning it. My friend does this and has had great success. The chunks shouuldnt be hard anymore after pasteurization anyway...water has been added so they should be much softer. Screw blending before doesn't make much sense and it just seems like a real pain in the arse. Just because they are still in chunks when you go to spawn it doesn't mean you have to leave it in chunks... break those mofo's up!

I use my kitchenAid:

but I may try just using chunks, now. Anyway, use small amounts at a time, it comes out more uniform.
