irradiating mail

On msnbc they where considering irradiating mail to kill anthrax spores. This might soon become a problem for mailing spore prints.

Ya, I doubt that they would be able to afford those methods, even if they did there woould be a way of getting around them I'm sure. Like sending the spores disguised in something that would be destroyed by radiation.

is there a way to protect our spores? I just read this in a AP news release,

"On a day of rapidly unfolding events, Potter said the Postal Service had stopped cleaning its machinery with blowers, a procedure that could have caused lethal anthrax spores to spread through the air. He also said equipment was being purchased that "can eradicate (the spores) and sanitize the mail." "

I brought this same subject up about a week ago in another thread. It does sound like a threat BUT it's so fucking expensive and slow to do it that the goverment is bound to come up with something else. I heard today that it would take like 20 minutes to nuke one single letter in a microwave to kill anthrax. All of the options so far to kill anthrax in the mail would slow our mail delivery down so much that it could destroy the American economy. I'm sure that they will keep searching for another option in the mean time.

Is there any other traces of this actually becoming a reality?
What do you think they're method will be... gamma radiation?
You have to take into account all of the people with legit buisnesses that rely on the mail to send seeds and stuff...
I worked at UPS for awhile, people send all kinds of stuff...bees...food... large chunks of steel.., I doubt that they'd be able to afford the equipment not to mention the (expensive, highly trained)manpower to make the damn things work. It probably won't change unless they start having workers die and their insurance goes up...

I just logged on for the first time in a while to discuss this very same issue.

I wouldn't discount it without serious thought. People have died. More will die. Billions of dollars are being tossed around like pepermints at a christmas parade. These machines are already being used at our borders to irradiate produce and whatnot, so they can't be completely out of reach for implementation.

Microwaves are a bad analogy. Microwaving a dry letter does nothing. Without water, the microwave doesn't work. A steam iron on the other hand kills anthrax easily. As does UV light, which is actually what the post office is implementing now. Cheap, easy, effective. Protects only the exterior of the letter though. In other words, protects the Postal Workers, not the recipient. NPR had a guy on talking about implementing UV imediately to protect the workers. He was saying that the cost of irradiation is feasible, but requires much more preparation than simply setting up a few UV bulbs. He was pushing them both though...

An automated system that the mechanical sorters could feed is possible. At least at major hubs/sorting stations.

So, what would work to stop this, Aluminum foil? glass? copper tubing? Kryptonite? Does anybody have an educated idea? Would packages be scanned for whatever defense there is, and then oppened on suspicion of bioweapons? That would be worse than bunk prints.

This could be the worst blow to the hobby ever. The OMC's green merchant!

I heard that NPR report this evening as well. The interviewee pointed out that "typical"
radiating equipment will not penetrate through into a box for example, but
did suggest that "ionizing radiation" would. Have no idea of the costs.
Does nothing for chemicals that might be used as weapons though.
Time will tell. Everyone keep printing,buying, trading and/or stashing.

what about UPS, fedex, etc., etc?
also... i am sure there will be a special protocol for things that can't be radiated, such as film, which would be ruined if transported by mail.... and hell this isn't ALL BAD.... If these machines work as well as they are supposed to, you could THEORETICALLY mail your jars to yourself to have the sterilized.... now wouldn't that be cool as shit! hahahaha.
