this cake was one of two cakes that came out of the jars. they were took out of the jars and smelt kinda funky. i cant tell but is that grayish stuff in the middle contamination? would the shrooms be safe for consumption?

It is hard to tell from the picture but....If it is cobweb you will know tomorrow....that stuff grows so incredibley rapidly that there is no mistaking it. You will probably even be able to tell later today.

I really just need to know if this is indeed contamination... The mushrooms on the 2 cakes are doing fine. The gray looking stuff isn't getting any bigger. Could it possibly be dead mycelium or something?

Try misting with a h2o/h2o2 mixture with a 9:1 ratio. It will help killing the contam, don't worry if it is not a contam, this solution is not harmfull to the mycelium.
Anyway, it looks like the cake is not 100% colonized, you should have cut the uncolonized area, it is easier for contams to overtake the substrate if you don't.
