H2O2/casing questions...

I'm using the typical 3% solution mixed in a 5:1 ratio (water/H2O2.) Yes I do understand that is can slow mycellial growth in my casings. I was dribbling the mixture on some dry spots of the casings. (BTW Primordia appeared 36 hours ago) Well to my amazement it started to foam. When H2O2 foams it means only one thing. Germs. I only noticed it in a couple of areas and saturated it pretty well in those spots. I'm also seeing signs of overlay. I'm fanning 3 times daily and temp is steady 75Deg F and Rh is 85%. The gauge I have for that is accurate to +/- 5 deg under 85% so it's basically a crapshoot as far as that goes. Questions: What are the causes of overlay? Is there a catalougue of contams with pics?

I'm not sure what you mean by "over-lay". Are you talking about the "bare spots" that sometimes happen in cakes where there is not a complete colonization? If so, I cut out these uncolonized area and re-case. Sometimes it works.....other times I've lost the entire terrium.....

I think a 5:1 ratio is too much of h2o2, i use 9:1. Also you should only use thi mix when you see contams although you may use it as a prevention tool it's not really needed. Also, why do you say h2o2 only foams in the presence of germs ? Mycelium foams too and it also depends on how you use the mister. Overlay is caused by high Rh and usally when the pinning process takes too long, letting the mycellium over run the top layer. One solution is to add only a bit of casing material to those overlay spots. Peace, MAIA

foaming means only one thing: oxidization.. there could be a number of things that are causing the h2o2 to foam.. and yeah that seems a bit strong a solution to use on your whole casing regularly. as for the catalogue of pics try http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Contams&Number=420457&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#Post535630 .. it is the post at the very top of this forum
