Or even if the mycelium grows over the contams are they still alive?

Yes, it depends on many things. One of the most important is the kind of contam you're dealing with. Search the contamination FAQ and learn about them.

It might be, that's why a good inspection is needed before continuing with a previous contaminated substrate.
