Thanks.

It's a fair bit darker and has a blue tinge in natural light. I think it's just the flash that made it unusually green.

This certainly is good news then. It means I have an almost unlimited supply. Well, maybe not unlimited but sustainable nonetheless. Thanks

I have a San Pedro and a Peruvian Torch that are growing nicely in this hot weather lately.  I'm wondering if they just grow straight or do they ever branch?  I'd like to see some arms start off of these things, anything I can do to make it branch?  mostly so I can start another cactus and eat the rest without losing my decor

And here we need miss Biology!

The reason a plant wont exhibit lateral growth is the apical dominance of the apical meristem, that is the top part of your cactus that gives cactus its height.By damaging it lateral growth will appear...Have you noticed that if one plants a midstem cutting it pups but not grow in height?

Another idea ,that doesnt require damaging the apical meristem is applying cytokinins such as zeatine or benzylaminopurine.

Here are two posts of interest :

"6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP or BA for short) is a cytokinin that stimulates branching in many plants. I normally use it in tissue culture media but i recently read something about stuff called 'keiki paste'. It's a paste that orchid growers use to stimulate the formation of keiki's (new plantlets). It would supposedly contain cytokinin.

So i made a paste of lanolin (sheep wool grease) and BAP. The lanolin was melted in a water bath and the BAP was added and mixed in. Final concentration was 1% w/w

With a toothpick a bit of the paste was smeared onto the areoles of some cacti and the results were stunning."

Or coconut milk?  If these things weren't cacti, my green thumb would have killed them by now.  About all I understand is the smear areoles with toothpick

Yes you got half of it

New cactus branches start from areoles, that means the place where spines come from. What you need to do its apply any cytokinin at areoles, and you need it to stay there in order to act hence the lanonin which is of a "gooey" consistency!

You could buy some coconut milk, make its consistency thicker than it is so it stays where you put it and apply it on areoles near the base. Its not that difficult ,you just have to experiment to see what floats your boat better!
