Cool Stealth Terrarium lighing idea
    #4308145 - 06/17/05 05:46 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I have heard that blue LEDs work so I was thinking I could buy (or build) a strip of 3 or so blue LEDs that would be powered by a 9V (or 2 AAs). Then I could just tape this to the bottom of my terrarium top and this would just look like a storage container from the outside. It looks pretty obvious something is up when you have a light on top of your box.

Anyone know where I could find a strip like this? If not Radioshack should have all the stuff I need to build this. How many LEDs do you think I would need to provide enough intensity for the shrooms to grow correctly? The terrarium is about 1.5 feet high.

I use these for my tubs. Work great.

I also have a tub setup with a fan with LED's.

Both of them work well.

i used two (blue green and blue) on a flash circuit so theyd have a heap of darkness too, seemed to work well - either way they work:) but u want them off sometimes and also make sure they face a bit towards the mush cos leds are directional with about 35degree spread in the beam

intensity is not much of an issue as far as i know, as long as there are photons of the correct wavelength bouncing around some of the time - from memory ur aiming at 470nm blue...i still used high intensity leds (3000-5000 mcd) the whole assembly woulda been about aus$15

go to radioshack and grab some high intensity blue leds make sure u get a look at the wavelength they put out most places will have a table or a reference for it. all u need then is a bit of wire and ul probably need 4.5v for the high intensity leds so 3aa batterys (in a holder) and a switch. its actually better for growing and led life to get them flashing but if u cant solder and electronics scares u id keep it simple..

bike lights for fruiting. [Re: nitroguy]

Go to a couple of good bike shops and you will see various LED lights for cyclists. They come in red most often but they are also often available in blue leds and or white. AND YOU CAN SET THEM TO FLASH! Which will give your shooms what they need and save on battery life. From $12 to $15.00 usually and all you gotta do is clip it on where you want it. I use two...one at each end of my 6' by 2' fruiting chamber. Sometimes general dept stores have similar and in their bike sections and you will get a little better deal.

Colour doesn't matter at all. Temperature does. That's why you can leave small LED lights on all the time. Incan's generate too much heat if left on all the time.

This is also why you want indirect light. (when dealing with higher wattage).

So flashing on and off all day is fine? As long as they get some darkness, it is good, but it doesn't have to be continuous darkness? Is that what I am understanding?

id recomend going to walmart, they have these little blue led clusters of 6 leds in the automotive section, the part with all the crappy shif knobs and crap like that, theyre only 10 bucks and prettymuch foolproof to wire, if u wanna go with leds, these may be the easyest for what you want

Im second those questions that mushrooms can fruit with a continuously flashing L.E.D as in they dont need straight darkness for a period of time andthen straight light? This would be excellent for my setup

Basically, yeah. It doesn't need a dark cycle or anything - the light just tells the fruits which way is up. That's why they seem to grow towards the light.
