OK... what the real light time for shrooms.
    #1063924 - 11/18/02 09:37 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I have read the FAQ and other information which it telling me that to pin and/or grow they need 30 min- 2 hours or light to grow. Other people are telling me to go with a 12/12 cycle, and that 2 hours is not nealry enough. I am getting mized responses. I've got a few B+ cake in a chamber for a week and no pinning, i hope its do to lack of light but i am not sure here. Can i get some input on this please. Thanks for your help

"The Mushroom Cultivator (by Paul Stamets and J.S. Chilton)
Page147: THE INFLUENCE OF LIGHT ON PINHEAD INITIATION
A thorough investigation of the photosensitivity of Psilocybe cubensis can be found in a master's thesis by E.R. Badham(1979).His work reinforces the conclusions of other researchers working with basidiomycetes:more pinheads are initiated upon exposure to blue and ultra-violet light with distinct peaks at 370, 440 and 460 nanometers. Badham showed that light stimulation at these wavelenths for as little as half a millisecond per day caused primordia to form.In contrast, red, infra-red and green light having wavelengths greater that 510 nanometers were ineffective."

P.cubensis, do not need any light to grow. Just half a millisecond per day to initiate pinning.

Note- cubensis will pin and mature in total darkness. Staments/Chilton are talking about optimals here.

There is no one ammount of time. Light just makes them grow upwards. they don't need it.

I've heard 5 minutes a day is sufficient. I wonder what thecommercial farms use?

My cakes sometimes take 7 or 8 days to pin, If I birth them early, like just after the surface is colonized, then they take longer. I think if you have the patience to leave them in the jars for an extra 5-7 days after surface colonization they will pin much faster after birthing and your first flush will probably be larger. However, I am not patient enough to wait this long. As for light I make sure they get at least 4 hours even if though they probably don't need it.
