Locked Thread Policy
    #4279390 -

I feel that anonymous locks are feeding into the lack
of continuity and accountability that is plaguing the
moderation of some forums.

I believe that if a thread is to be locked, that the mod
who has taken the action should post in the thread
with a note indicating the reason why the thread was
locked.

This will keep the confusion and FUD to a minimum
by clearly explaining the reason for the closure as
well as establishing a clear record of lockings for each
moderator.

Surely accountability and clearer communication
can't be a bad thing.

I don't know if this version of UBB has or lacks the feature, but a nice feature from many forums I've helped at that I've liked is the moderator/administrator "After posting do..." So in order to lock it, you'd have to post saying "I'm locking this thread because of FOOBAR." and then select "Lock this thread after posting" and voila.

I completely agree. It'd be much more helpful even if the mod just quoted which rule the person broke, or gave a one-sentence explanation. It's extremely annoying when a thread is suddenly locked and you don't know where it went wrong or why.

LOL, you should get a trial copy of UBBThreads and check it out.
You will notice that we have ADDED dozens if not hundreds of features here which are not in the standard UBBThreads.
The only worthwhile things that comes with UBBThreads and are not enabled here is:
- attachment upload (we have a custom image upload instead)
- HTML use in posts (for security reasons)

so, why shouldnt mods provide a reason for locking threads?

Re: Locked Thread Policy [Re: Vvellum]

If a thread is locked, then because it is against the rules. Most times it is very obvious, to everybody, why. If it is not obvious, read the rules, and you will find out.
The moderators are currently not required to provide a reason, but they of course can if they wish.

This makes me think it would be desired?  Also, having little experience with UBB on the administrative side makes it difficult to guess which features are remiss

It'd be a pretty simple addition to ensure that they must say something, even a link to the rules (also easily made an auto-response).

I volunteer to code it.

That's not always true. I posted a thread in OTD that got me banned yet the only response I received was the coverall "Mods and Admins have the final say!". How can someone know exactly how they broke the rules when there is such an all encompassing "rule" which offers no real direction.

While I agree that people should read and follow the rules
, the rules are often subjectively applied(what might be offensive to one mod may not be to another) making it difficult to follow the rules..
There is no baseline.
If the Mods were to give a reason for a locking/deleting stuff repeat breaking of the rules may be reduced.

----

from my post in the Mod forum over this issue :

The problem I see happening is this...
Mods get a notification to check a post...they decide to close the thread.
They start getting harrassed over closing the thread from a bunch of hostile members...aka troublemakers.
They start taking hits in their ratings...and get upset.
I personally don't give a rats ass about my ratings...but others might.
The Mod get's tired of getting harrassed and stop's closing threads...and leave's it to someone else to close the thread...and it never gets closed.
Or the Mod get's tired of getting harrassed and quits being a Mod.

just my 2 cents worth.

If I ever do leave it would be over something alot more important than this.

I completely understand where you're coming from. If anyone should be complaining about this, it should be you. With the amount of threads you have to lock, I think you should be given an exemption from this rule. If a thread is locked in the cult. forum, it is usually obvious why it was locked.

Extras: Filter Print Post Top
Re: Locked Thread Policy [Re: Rose]
    #4291595 -

look, I can accept that.

And that would be fine if there wasn't so much bullshit
going on here and there with decent threads being
locked or deleted for no apparent reason.

But there is a LOT of ambiguity out there, despite how
many times Anno harkens to the rules.

Furthermore, if there's no 'locking games' going on, then
we don't have anything to worry about, but with this rule
it will become abundantly clearer when there ARE some
questionable locks/bans/deletes occuring and creates
a much more open framework for recognizing and
remedying the situation.

Do I want to make your life worse, no.

Do I want to make Roadkill's life worse, no.

Do I want mods to step down, hell no.

Should we strive for an open and honest administration, yes.

I would wager than an anonymous lock is more likely
to instigate the type of shit you guys have already
complained about, (ie: mass PMs and followup threads)
than a non-anonymous lock.

At the very least, you know who the active mod is to
take the issue up with and the reasoning gives no
oppotunity for rebuttal in the form of followup threads
if it is a just and reasonable explanation.

I think if a mod is required to add their username then they're less likely to ban/lock for an ambiguous reason. As mentioned before it adds accountability. When I post I'm responsible for what I say. When a mod/admin locks/bans they should be accountable for their actions thus hopefully creating more uniform moderation.

Yes, but this is based on the assumption that ALL Mods lock the same ammount of threads. This is simply false. In most Forums, one Mod (or two) will take on the brunt of the locking duties. They will potentially look Nazi-like, in the eyes of the public... especially if the public continues to demand vague and intangable things like, "Accountability" . Yet, they are only doing MORE than their share of the lockings.

I will admit, there is value for this feature in Forums such as OTD and The Pub, which would not run w/o some drama ... but in the Mushroom Forums, this will only bring UNWANTED drama.

That Swami thing SUCKED... you guys had a great case, until you started calling the Mods names (and there were No Admins, but geo around) it was Christmas break and NOBODY was on duty... I was outside my home forum so I couldn't lock the thread... I could only warn and ban. I hope you understand. I banned Whiterasta too that night! Hehehe...

On the bright side, I only gave you a 1 hour ban . The Admins won't let us ban for under 24 now.

Wow Tao... 5 shrooms again! That looks much better! Should I give you a retaliation rating?

And to be fair, Roadkill's (private) aliby checks out... he posted it in the Mod forum (he had just been re-modded and wisely, told the Admins and Mods his side of the story), but RK was advised to keep the explination private to minimize drama... and he took a few hits for it.

Boxtop, like Roadkill, is a popular guy, who has helped many Shroomerites. People would have just played favorites (because we LOVE drama!). This didn't seem fair to Roadkill because he had just returned to the community after a long absence, and at the time, many new faces only knew of Boxtop. Roadkill was, once again, the new kid on the block.

Basically the whole situation was like a divorce (only a gay one )... ugly, and both sides were pissed at each other.

Sometimes details are best kept private... even though they may set you free. In fact, it seemed this was a part of the reason Boxtop even made this issue public... because it was SOOO ackward for RK to discuss.

He didn't need to tell his entire side of the story, he could have just popped into the thread and said "Boxtop is lying, but it is a private issue between him and myself and I will not discuss it on a public message board, I'd just like people to know that he's not telling the truth." Surely that would have been a good idea. For him not to even deny the charges came across strikingly as guilt.

Yup it did look bad... but like I said, sometimes there is a VALID reason to keep things private, even if that reason would not be viewed as bad by this community... the Mods understood why it was best kept private INSTANTLY! We also, unanimously believed Roadkill's version of events.

Let's just say in America... we (Cultivation Mods in particular) shouldn't publicly mention all of our past activities... something most Sponsors, community members, cultivation Mods and cultivators understand very well.

Sadly, I still think this is partly why Boxtop brought the issue up in the first place.

I hate it, but I can't say more.

Please keep this ON TOPIC, this is a discussion about locked thread accountability.

Now back to this, the question has been asked if mods could close a thread and leave a reason but not have it say which mod closed the thread.

How is that for comprimise?

It solves the problem of mods being unfairly attacked for doing their job, it also gives the public the reasons as to why the thread was locked.

when a thread gets locked for no apparent reason (to me) and is left unexplained, it kinda upsets me.....especially if its a thread that i was a part of. a brief explanation of which rule was broken, and where in the thread this occured would be awsome. and no, i dont think the mod/admin who did the locking needs to make themselves known, as long as there was an explanation as to why it was locked. if a thread gets locked, its locked....doesnt matter by who. but there are many times i wonder why.

I agree with Cervantes that the locked thread dilemma applies mainly to the lower forums at the very least starting with the Pub. I would say to start from General Questions and go down but that's up to the admin/mods and the community. I don't see anywhere nearly as much discrepancy in the Mushrooms and Mycology forums.

So as a compromise how do the admins/mods and community feel about implementing the new policy (reason for lock AND admin/mod responsible) starting with either General Questions or the Pub?

if they are gonna do this, they may as well do it for all the forums.....but i still see no need to identify the mod/admin who locked the thread.....just leave an anonymous explanation as to who broke what rule, and leave it at that. its not that hard guys.

Re: Locked Thread Policy [Re: newuser1492]

This is beside the point I guess, but I always try to leave an explanation of why I lock a thread anyway. Anyone who has sent me PMs about mod actions knows that I always try to explain my motives as thoroughly as possible. It takes a little longer but I like to let people know why I locked/edited/deleted a thread.

That being said...

Locks in GQ and the other drug forums are usually pretty clear cut, I would say if you're going to implement a system that forces mods to leave a reason, that it should be implemented from the pub down.

no. mods should leave their names. if they are following the rules, then they should have nothing to worry about. if a member harasses them, then ban them.

like I said in the other thread, if you cant stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. if a moderator is so afraid of some 17 year old dork in OTD, then they should not be moderator.

standing by your actions is a good thing.

Accountability IS achieved with the explanation.

Any issue people will have will be with the reason why their thread was locked, NOT by whom as depending on who's online it may as well have been any other mod/admin who closed a thread.

If a thread is closed and it is unproper, then it will be brought up in this forum and the admins can investigate the matter.

Thus ACCOUNTABILITY

You are naive if you think leaving a name to the locked thread will not create a problem, or you would maybe believe this to be geniunely true if you are a total newbie.

Drama; welcome to the Shroomery

But you seem to forget that most of the forums only have like 4 moderators. So, it's not like there is any sort of anonymity that you speak of.

By having moderators put their name next to their actions (like anybody should if they have integrity and are following the rules), this would reduce the amount of flack that everyone would get. The criticism would be direct and to the person in charge. If a moderator cannot speak for their actions, then they should not be moderator.

You seem to think that if you hide moderators' names, that no one will complain - I do not see this.

I just think people in authority should have some balls and own up to their actions. I see no reason for keeping it all a secret.

Feedback:

By giving a reason for the locked thread, you provide an example of what is unacceptable that may not be as clearly apparent from a reading of the rules.

A picture (reason) is worth a thousand words.

PM Material, when your account is unbanned in an few hours you can ask the mod who locked your thread, you cannot make puppets to get around bans though.

No no no. I don't think it will lessen complaints, I think it will bring the complaints to this forum for the Admins to look at.. We are the ones who have to monitor our mods and users.. So if a mod is locking inappropriately the next step is to let us know in this forum.

We can find out what mod is inappropriately closing threads and then deal with them.

Its not a secret who's locking, its that mod #1,#2,#3 of the forum would ALL be taking the same action so to single out one of those as the problem is silly. If the 'reason' is the problem then like I've said you bring it up with the admins in this forum and we can discuss it with the forum mods.
