Locked Threads

Could someone please explain to me why the mods here insist on locking every thread that is even remotely covered by the faq? The faq is not God, despite what they may think. While the faq is a very good starting point, locking threads that are supposedly answered by it does nothing but opprese the opportunity to gather alternative opinions. For instance, I read a thread today which posted a question regarding the proper pH level of a casing. Good points were being expressed as to exactly what the optimum pH should be. In spite of this interesting discussion, the moderator appears to have locked the thread because the faq says 8. By doing this, he eliminated the opportunity to gather more opinions on the subject. When the poster reposted, the moderator locked the thread once again. While we do not want lazy questions such as "I wanna grow some shrooms, can you help me," I believe it is irresponsible and oppressive to lock threads where differences of opinion can be gathered. There is a world of experience on this board and it would be a shame not to get every last benefit from it.

Are you talking about the MC forum? If so, exactly what thread are you referring to? A link would be nice. As far as I know, most threads that have been locked were locked for flaming of some sort, or they contained inappropriate subject matter.

The threads I gave in my example were in the Advanced Mushroom Cultivation and was posted by Crack and were closed by DInoMyc.

Actually the faq gives a range, "The casing should be balanced to an initial pH of 6. 8-7. 2", with the warning not to go over 8 in any case.

Anno,

As I said earlier, the faq is an excellent place to start. What bothered me was that people were beginning to discuss the nuances of pH level and their OPINIONS/EXPERIENCES regarding it and the thread was locked. Why lock a thread when a healthy discussion is going on? I understand there are situations where locking a thread may be necessary such as flame wars, but this was not one of them. I mean, come on, we allow post whores to post pages and pages of useless babble without locking them, but we can't allow a discussion of what works best for people? All I'm saying is that I believe the moderators should be less trigger happy in locking threads that are supposedly covered by the faq.

That?s what qualifies a question to come in the FAQ....

So, questions that has been asked over and over and are in the faq, might get locked.
