Would it be possible to use 1 Pt. jars with the PFTek's instructions, no lids and Micron Majick Disks instead of lids and a top verm layer? I think that it would be a good idea if it was possible....

boiling is just as damn good, but not as fast.. i mean, i sterilized 24 jars 6 days ago by boiling, then closed em tight after they had cooled.. i let em sit the 6 days without touchin em just to see if they would go contam. none of them did, but im gonna wait another week just to make sure before i inoculate them.. this was just a test to see how good boiling actually was.. it doesnt seem half bad. peace

Since the tek is ideal for half pint and you're using pint then I guess you'd have to double the amounts ;)

I used full pints for the longest time with no problems at all. I'm using some 1/2 pints now on a substrate recipe experiment -- a bit better for control. Just fill the pint jars with substrate and inoculate as you would a 1/2 pint. They just take a little longer. I had my pints colonize in 14 days. The only problem with boiling is you have no way of telling if the center of the jar was heated enough to kill any competitors. There could be a green blob festering in there and you'd never know. The pressure cooker/sterilizer is the way to go. One hour in there and all doubts are removed. Peace.

That's exactly what I do without the top verm layer. With the MM disks you don't need it. Use a PC. That was the very first thing I bought and was definitly the best investment I could've made. I loosely drop in BRF/verm to about 3/4" from the top. With the disks the jars are usually fully colonized in two weeks or less.
