Cleaning tubing/contams
    #424768 - 10/14/01 01:40 AM (23 years, 3 months ago)

Got an ultrasonic setup w/ a timer-currently changing water/emptying bottles every other day, and rinsing out tubing and bottles with dilute H2O2/cleaning humidifier with dilute bleach once a week...question being: Is this often enough to ward off contams? Opinions anyone?

I'm no expert with electric humidification, but it sounds like you're kicking some ass keeping that thing clean.

From what I understand, it's good to add a few "healthy glug glugs" of h202 to your humidifier water to help keep bacteria from having a field day in your resevoir.

Cleaning everything else with dilute bleach pretty much guarantees it'll be clean but every week may be overkill if you're using cakes. Once your cakes get to the terrarium, sterility isn't a life or death situation anymore though it's still something you want to watch for. The mycelium (unless they're very old cakes) will ward off just about contams pretty well and as long as you keep the humidifier decently clean you should have no problem.

The only time I would think that cleaning it every week would be required was if you're working with casing, especially something organic like peat or soil. Warm, wet casing material can get all sorts of contams if you're not careful to keep it's exposure to outside air to a minimum.
