How are transcripts verified @ college?

When applying to college, local state school, how do they verify high school transcripts / diploma? Do they call, or do you provide them with the physical paper? What if your highschool didnt have you on file, but you had supporting documents saying you attended because there was an error in the computer system at the time?

Just curious.

For college, I had to provide official High School and previous college transfer transcripts to get in. It took quite awhile to verify it all, so I have no doubt the system is checked pretty thoroughly.
