black specs,dots,(contam?)

Hey there everyone.
I posted this in another forum and was wondering if I would find the same answers here.
my fish have some black specs around my inoculation sites.......? it doesnt look like mold because it is not fuzzy, or joined together or anything,,,,just black specs. Wondering if it is a contam, or clumped up sprores or vermiculite pieces stuck up against the jar? BRF/VERM. cake

Did you have a dark syringe? With my last batch,I used a super dark syringe and I had black specks myself. They turned out to be spores.

sounds like spores. in a few days those black spots will grow white strands from them. that will be mycellium.

a joint rolling spider monkey belonging to a friend of mine had a jar colonize halfway, then stop. later, maybe a week or so, noticed the bottom half of the jar had black specs in it. looked like what you described, all black, tiny little grains like all-black finely ground pepper. the monkey put the jar in a closet for about a week just to see what happened. no growth in the black stuff, mycellium got thicker and maybe cut off any air exchange to the lower part of jar. anyway, after the week of nothing happening, he popped the cake out, broke it in half, put the nice half in a 2-liter with perlite for shits and giggles. it pinned more and faster than any of my other jars. anyone know what that stuff was? getting full grown guys now, so he's curious whether they're safe to eat. thanks.

I have the exact same thing in one of my jars right now, only at the spot of inoculation, looks like exactly what everyones describing....I hope it's spores and not contams! :)

so far only 1 out of 12 jars got contams, they're about 75% done, the one that did have green mold growing in it somehow lost the top dry layer of verm and had green mold growing on the top of the jar, I opened it and cut the mold out (it was growing pretty deep, like 1/4 of the way down the jar) and filled it with dry verm, we'll see what happens, hopefully i'll still get a few shrooms out of it.
