Hawaii picking...
    #4213224 -

Hey all! I have tried to pick shrooms several times on the island of Oahu at the ranch that many of us may know. Every time I go I seem to find a few, but not nearly as much as I'd like to. Last time we went we thought we had more than enough, then when we ate them we felt nothing at all. I am almost 100% positive I'm picking the right type, not sure what I'm doing wrong.

What is the best time to go? At night, day, morning? When it's still wet out, will they all wither away if it has been sunny out recently? I figure it's best to go first thing in the morning right after a big rain so they haven't had a chance to dry up...or is this wrong?

Assuming that you are even looking in the right habitat, you might be picking an inactive species of panaeolus or something.. Make sure to check for blue bruising.

If you aren't 100% sure of what you are picking you shouldn't be eating it!

Search the forum here for oahu or hawaii, you will find ample information. Also read MJ's website he has anything you ever need to know about mushrooms in hawaii:

Short response is, the season for the copes is over here, which would explain your lack of findings. ps i sent you a PM

I might make a short mention about the ranch you refer to. The locals who work on the ranch, the panaeole's have pig holes set up around the ranch which are used to catch pigs. They are pit holes with bamboo shoots inthem to kill the pigs. Be very careful wandering around int heir paddocks if you do not know wher eyou are walking. You do not want to fall into one of them.

Here is a picture from that ranch of one area where such pig traps are laid close to. It is a warning to strangers a who are out there picking shrooms. the ranch hands have been know to beat a few pickers int he past. So be careful.

Sorry, could not find the larger image.
