For those using fish heaters....
    #4211267 - 05/23/05 08:01 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

EDIT: i now purchased a 100W Stealth... it holds temps at +/- 0.5F This is soooooo much better than all the other heaters i have meesed with including the 200W Penn-Plax Guardian

how consistant are your temps?

I have gone through 3 different brands and sizes.. the water and air temps in my TiT always swings a ~5 degree F range (80-85). Ive installed a pump in the water and a fan in the incubator... it makes things more even (no hot spots) but the temps still swing.

Not really looking for ways to fix my stuff but i might as well list my setup since it will be asked:

specifics on my stuff: ive tried 50watt heater (tetra brand and some other equivalent)... now i have a 200watt "Guardian" brand that ran me $40 (impossible to break and has tons of safety features).. the TiT itself is 2 20gal rubbermaids. i have probably 4-5 gallons of water in there and the top tub is weighted down. I have TWO remote thermometers in there logging the MAX and MIN temps that are very accurate. I also have a 90gph pump that i pulled the face off of so that it swirls the water around ALOT more than when it was setup to "pump" the water.. i actually get a little vortex going on in there at times. the fan is just an 80mm ~25cfm fan.. keeps things nice and mixed up.

Seriously, I had tons of trouble with heaters until someone suggested a Visi-Therm Stealth heater. It's unbreakable plastic and heats just right. I set it to 87 and it usually will stay at 85-87 all day. It's the best I've ever had. The last two I had busted while in the TiT. This one's going strong and quite consistent too. I got ia Visi-Therm Stealth 150 watt on Ebay for $23 including shipping.

hrm.. ive seen a few of them, ill definately try it out. the guardian heater i have is along the same lines.. uber safe and indestructible:http://www.pennplax.com/Pages/Aqua.pages..../Aqua28F.html unfortunately its not holding temps.

i can get a 200w stealth for close to the same price as the 100w stealth so i might as well get a 200w one.

I just bought a Rena 300 watt job after three top fins broke on me within five days. It seems to be doing a pretty damn good job, seems to be holding within about 2 degrees of what I set it at. I'll hit you back later tonight and let you know how it's holding up.

300w Penn - Plax heater  vs. 50w Tetra heater

No much in the way of temp fluctuations after I dialed it in, maybe a few degrees.  VERY good heater.  NO glass on the outside.  I went through three of those Tetras before laying down the dough for this heater (37$.. on sale from 55$!!)

Okay just to get back to you, the Rena I bought... is fucking amazing. No fluctuations at all either direction. It's been a consistent 84 degrees for 24 hours now with no movement in either direction. I also love this heater because you just set it and walk away, it monitors the temp by itself (how fucking amazing is that?) and it's submersible and comes with a stand and suction cup. The 300 watt job was $37.99 at Petsmart but they have less powerful models available but I think you should go with the best. Read my grow log if you don't believe me haha.

I had to set it for two degrees below what I wanted because the temp in the my incubator tub heats up two extra degrees when jars are in there but when you get it figured out it's fucking amazing. After four days after inoculation I saw no signs of growth whatsoever. After eight hours in the incubator I'm just beginning to see mycelium in some of the jars. I'm not saying that the incubator is all to thank for that, but I do think that finally having them in a stable consistent temp did worlds of good

I can't think of anything I did to stablizie temps other than putting a couple sheets of cardboard under the TiT and putting one sheet of cardboard in the incubation tub which I think may be helping a little bit but mostly I'd say it's just the Rena kicking ass

But yeah dude, I'm shocked and impressed with this beast. I highly recommend it to everyone.

any chance you could give us the full name, or a link to it?

what are you using to read the temps and how? how are you keeping track of the highs and lows?  is their anything circulating the water or air in your TiT?

Damn I gotta step up my game to a fish tank heater... I had a scare with a heating pad last night. Don't think I should use it for incubating anymore.

Can fish tank heaters be used in a fruiting chamber? Cause maybe ill stick with the heat pad for that.

yes they can!!!, i still dont have a fruiting chamber (im a newbie), but im about to have one, i spent the money at a really good party this week end, lol
Well anyways, what i plan do is use the same TIT teknique....
1- firt plastik container with some water and heater
2- than put 2nd plastik container on top and use that as the fruiting chamber, the heater underneath will keep the right temp.
what do yall think??

Here you go man.
http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_d...D=1117221531147

This thing is un-fucking-believable... Every time I pop the top on my TiT it's a consistant 84 degrees. Like it's not phased by anything, no fluctuations once so ever. It's amazing and awesome.

Phatwhitey420

i was wondering on your tit you dont have 55 to 100 gallons of water do you? I am just trying to figure out why you got such a big heater? Also does this unit com with a temperature probE? or is it a dial that you set to 84 degrees and thats that?

thanks

I got such a big heater because if I want to upgrade in the future to a bigger incubator I won't have to buy a new one. Also, I went through such a horror show with a 200 watt that I just went the bigger just because I didn't want to play games anymore. Most of the people recommend 100w to 150w heaters and I can't disagree with that but I just went with what I thought would work for me and so far I'm happy with the results.

It's a dial but it's right on the fucking money man. I set it to 82 because the incubating tub with jars in it rises about two degrees according to the thermometer in there. It took me two tries to get it dialed in, but once I got it set I just walked away and it's been five days of consistent non-fluctuating 84 degrees for my jars. And I've really been seeing amazing results in my jars. Hit up my grow log if you're interested.

Awesome... I love those "set it and forget" methods.

200 does seem a lot, but hell why not? You think a 100 watt stealth will be enough for a simple 12 jar load? I think I'm gonna go out now and get me one.

Thanks for all your input, it really helps us grow wiser as a community.
