Crossing the boarder without a passport

Im talking about crossing from Canada into the States, whose done it - ive got dreadlocks and will look reasonably ratty as ill have been on the road for awhile, of course ill clean up. Birth certificate and expired ID?

Guess i should get new ID.

You don't need a passport to go from Canada to the U.S. or vice versa just yet, but you will in a few years. I've gone over & back around 10 times, and they've only asked for ID twice.

would it be a good idea to get updated ID (my learners liscense is long expired, and its my only picture ID) - or ride the bus across?

The last time I crossed the border was june of last year, and I didn't use a passport. I have never used a passport to cross the border. Usually they just ask for ID, but sometimes not even that (such as the last time I crossed). If they do want ID, I give them my birth certificate and license.
