would it be a bad idea for someone to just walk over the US/Canada border with a backpack full of gear, spend some time in canada as an unregistered immigrant, then walk back into the US when the time is right? what kind of risks would someone who did that be taking? what if that someone was in possession of a personal stash of marijuana? what if that someone wanted to go into a few towns under these conditions? hitchhike? ride a bus? who would stop someone whos just walking over the mountains and wading rivers and stuff to get over the border? or would it be better to pay money for a passport, wait a few months and go through the checkpoint, like society wants them to do?

Probably not difficult... however the unwatched sections are generally pretty far from any sort of civilization - the biggest risk would likely be finding a town in Canada after crossing the boarder before you died

I'd just lose the pot and cross at an official crossing (assuming you have a passport)
I've done this before (canada to us though), at an official crossing in niagara falls. There were four of us with backpacks full of gear, all quite hippy looking, but they only even bothered to search the fully-bearded, long-dreadlocked guy (may have helped that i'm a dual citizen and the other 3 were americans) Still, it's not worth the risk bringing drugs. Weed is easy enough to find in canada anyway, and probably cheaper in most parts.
I dunno, I'd get a passport if at all possible and do things semi-legitly. Pretty sure most/all of the border is either mountains/rivers, or too far from civilization.

said someone is not concerned with being far away from civilization, but actually welcomes the opportunity. the reason why no passport is involved is because said person does not have $100+ to get one, and does not want to wait 2+ months for paperwork to go from hands to hands.

I don't think they stop you if you're walking through the checkpoints, could always put it in little baloons.

Isn't there a library in Vermont that sits directly on the Canadian border?
