A few questions about some materials
    #416079 - 10/06/01 08:41 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Hello all,

I would like to know about 2 materials:
1- Crushed Oyster Shell - The PF Casing Tek requires it, but I can't find it. Are there any other substances that can be used in its place? Also, what are the regular uses of Crushed Oyster Shell and what kind of stores sell it?

2 - Silica Crystals - Sold at my grocery store in big containers as an additive to kitty litter. I would expect it to be a very good dessicant, like silica gel but not in those stupid little packages for shoes. Has anyone used the large Silica Crystals for drying + did it work?

Thanks in advance
-Liam P

crushed oyster shell is mainly used as an additive to cattle feed. It's synthetic form, calcium carbonate, is exactly the same and one or the other (or both) are availible at feed stores or farmer supply stores. (yellow pages)

Also pet stores have it expensive.

A replacement could be yeast nutrient (wine making stores)
as it a powerful ph upper very little is needed and too much would spell disaster.
