should a casing be cold shocked when the mycelium startes to show in the nooks and crannys?

Beats me. I cold shocked mine and they just went to pot (well, to green mold; pot would be better) anyway, so I dug up my mycelium and now they're on perlite. My first impression of casing is that it's a pain in the ass to get the things to fruit before they're overrun with contaminants, but maybe cakes are a pain in the ass, too -- we'll see, we'll see.

Hey N, cold shocking is an attempt to simulate
the winter chill/spring thaw that wild mycelium
beds experience, its a somewhat
advanced manuver that isnt necessary for
growing mushrooms (i think its to get the flush
to pin more evenly or something), you shouldnt
worry about this step though.

I recently cold shocked my Golden teacher casing, by placing it in the fridge for 3 hours, because i was worried i was starting to get overlay, with no pinnage.

But the next day i had pins, and now its all going well.

I was reading a past thread about 'cold shocking' which brought
up an interesting point. As the mycelium colonizes it produces
its own energetic heat, so when the myc. reaches its critical
mass and its growth slows down, the mycelium's internal temps
also decrease since the tissue isnt so busy at work spreading
itself into substrates and casings.. so its like the mycelium cold
shocks itself when it reaches its critical mass, and than its got
nowhere to go but up(:o])
