intelligence
    #4147914 - 05/07/05 08:38 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Do any of you ever question your intelligence?

I see a lot of people here thinking they can understand the whole universe with reason and logic

But do any of you stop and think that perhapse you are to stupid to understand some things?

I knew a guy in highschool that didn't understand anything beyond 2nd grade el. school mathematics, and no matter how you tried to explain anything to him it was just beyond his reach
We all have such limits somewhere

The avarage man with IQ100 is pretty limited even in limits of human society and using electronics and stuff like that, and even those with IQ 200 have limits

So a question to those rationalists out there, do you honestly think you can figure it all out? Human mind can come only so far before it ends up spinning in circles.

Oldwood, I'd be surprised if you found any rationalists out there that really think they could figure it all out.

Those egomaniacs just think they know almost everything.

just think of it like one of those pictures that are made up of like 10,000 smaller shots of various different things, but still comes together as one giant picture when looked at as a whole (I forget now what they're technically called)

but anyways -

now imagine that this giant outer picture is nothing more then a single tiny pic in a whole nother 10,000 picture set (each of which would be made up of their own set of 10,000 even smaller micro pics) and the corresponding super pic that would be created by zooming out even farther would mearly be one single pixel on and even larger / more complicated pic even farther out then that one

but here's the catch:
it's all the same freakin pic
(just done in multiple different ways)

you can venture out as far as you'd like, and see as many differnt varients of the same pic as you possibly can (e.g. expand your understanding as much as humanly possible) and you'd never run out of shit to learn...but just because you're able to get an even more clear image of what it is you're looking at, that by no means implies that you weren't perfectly capable of understanding what it was you were looking at from the very first time you saw it

in short:

understanding the essense of these sorts of things is easy enough for even the most simplistic of minds...everything beyond that is simply a matter of embelishing things you already know

How does this apply for people who do not understand squares and roots?

I do, and have concluded to my sadness that I am not very intelligent. I make up for it as best I can with a quick wit, and some small wisdom gained through suffering and psychedelics. :mushroom2:

we are not talking about ultimate truths, but figuring out with logic questions like: do aliens exist, which teachings are true, which are not, is there god, what is god, is there life after death etc.

In a word - no. I've noticed that the more things I learn, the more things I realise I don't know....

I think I can figure enough out to, every moment, be content not thinking about any of it, and to find the answers within myself when needed. To consciously entertain all answers all the time is indeed impossible. It's a matter of symbolic internal storage, IMO.

I don't support IQ gradients as the approach regarding its use is a bit old fashioned, and it doesn't really way all forms of intellect.

No, we can't figure it all out, but we can try too... better to attempt to understand something then to simply explain it away with a 3 and/or a 5 letter word.

Intelligence is far less valuable than wisdom.

The world is never lacking in intelligent failures. You can be the most intelligent person on the planet; If you don't find a way to translate your intelligence into meaningful change then your intelligence doesn't mean jack squat.

Small wonder Swami hasn't contributed to this thread..

I used to question my intelligence. I was highly criticized when I was a child and pretty much on up through my 30s. It wasn't until I passed the bar exam that people finally decided I MUST have some intelligence, if I was able to pass the bar exam.

The way I see it, we are all highly intelligent in some areas, maybe not so intelligent in other areas. I am very good at what I do, with words, but I am stymied by math and that stuff. I can DO math, if I have to, but it makes my brain hurt.

I have met a few people who are good in all areas of knowledge. I have met people good at math but who suck at writing. I have met people good at writing but who suck at math (me, for one).

And there are people who are very book smart, but they lack wisdom.

The only way I can explain this, and this explanation is cheap considering all the things I COULD say but it would take several pages, is to say that we are each of us grounded where we are at based on our brains and our limits, our experiences, our education, etc.

Don't let the opinions of others, or your own opinion of yourself, hold you back from achieving what it is you want to do in life. If I had listened to others, I wouldn't be doing what I am doing now.

I think EVERYONE that posts here at the Shroomery is very intelligent. I wouldn't say that if I didn't think it. I just wouldn't say anything.

I too think shroomery is visited by highly intelligent people

But what I'm trying to say is this is almost as good as it gets in intelligence

People here expect everyone to use reason the same way they do, but not realising they are far above avarage in intelligence

Like I said, the avarage man can not fully understand instructions for a new TV and can't set a clock on their stereo system

It is a kind of a Leary approach, he used expect everyone to think for themselfs because he could, but majority of people can't think for themselfs, not because they are misled, but because they simply can't think, and it's not going to change

___________________________________________________________________

I don't think (ha) the problem is some people can't think and are born that way. The culture teaches them how not to think and tells them they are thinking. This is what I call the Cultural Matrix or Big Sleep. Who can tell if that's going to change. It seems to be getting worse each day.

Humans outside the Matrix often think quite well, but they are rare. Very rare. I consider myself mostly asleep in the Matrix. 52 years of conditioning. Psychedelics have been instrumental in stiring my complete slumber but I know I have some ways to go. Leary was right about getting everyone to turn on. I think it's the only hope to break the stranglehold of the matrix. :mushroom2:
