How many people here are using computers. If it weren't for americans like bill gates, who i dislike dont get me wrong, we may not have these machines that run so much of the amenities that we've become accustomed too.

Yup. The US isn't perfect, but to see those imperfections as representative of the whole system is ignorance par excellence. Something that drug-addled hippy teenagers are good at, noone take offense to that please.

Yea, tell me about it. He gives more to charity than most liberal-types do (even though he is some what liberal, really), but since hes managed to make something out of himself, provide thousands of jobs and make a gigantic contribution to the modernization of the world, hes got to be evil.

I'm sure his noble intentions were to provide jobs, contribute to modernization, and help people thru donating money (cough tax break, but it appeases his wife too). His objective was to milk the technological industry for all its worth, capitalism at its finest.

Read more---lets look at his recent donations...to the largest pharmaceutical industry (Merck, Johnson & Johnson, etc) and nations where his software monopoly hangs in the balance.

Don't make assumptions about my life, you know nothing about me. I could compete my generosity against Bill Gates but I don't feel generosity is about praise or accolades. If I had as much money as him, I would give away 99% of it and retire, no one needs a fucking billion dollars to live. All I am saying is don't be naive and think he's donating every cent for no benefit of his own.

Kantian philosophy comes into play here, and I don't like Kant that much and I doubt that you've read much of him. Even IF Gates is donating money for some self-serving purpose (although if he feels good about it, is that the 'purpose') does it make the result any less meaningful?

You insinuated that he does it for tax breaks which is just a completely illogical statement.

He has said he plans to give 99.9% to charity in his will, but doing so now would mean less money as it is currently invested in stocks.

Yeah, pharmaceutical corporations have the best chance to develop medicine to cure/vaccinate malaria. Should he donate to mom and pop grocery stores to see if they can help cure malaria? and are you insinuating that he makes money of off the pharmaceutical industry? and how does his software monopoly hang in the balance in Africa? Last time I checked everyone was free to download linux if they so desire.
