Does birdseed cause contamination if you don't use a pressure cooker? If this is true could I just substitute some organic millet and/or org amaranth and just boil them? Shawn

No, you'll need a pressure cooker. Look on ebay for a decent one. They can go for about $50 but may need a replacment item worth $5. It is worth it. Alos, ckeck out your local thrift store.

boiling for an excessive amt of time wont work b/c the water will never reach above 212 F. you need the higher temps achieved by a pc (250 F) to properly sterilize whole grains/seeds. ebay's a great place- i got a 22qt pressure canner for 30$ ... you just havta look and be patient (i was looking for about a month or so before i found the right deal for me). gluck

and grinding them will only make flour, and not the bulk subs you want for seed/grains (you cant shake ground seed like you can wen theyre whole). i dunno if anyone has tried ground seed...?

well, it is possible to achieve sterilization without a pressure cooker, but it is more trouble than it is worth. you can do it in an oven, but not with bird seed, it's too contaminated. if your oven is over 250 degrees, then you'll carmelize the grain, and it won't work right, so it is an extreamly delicate opperation. there are some published reports of people who cultivate on a grand scale, non magical species using oven sterilization. they have the advantage of an oven that is easy to temp control, and it is used for only that purpose, and they have it organized into a system to make it efficient. save yourself a lot of money and grief, buy yourself a used pressure cooker and stick to less than tons per day cultivation.
