pressure cooker q

I'm sure this question has been asked a zillion times on this board (yes I did do a search), but what sort of pressure cooker is best for shrooming purposes, or is one as good as another? I just moved into my own place and am ready to move on to a more effective method of sterilizing bird seed -- no more tedious boiling of jars at midnight after everyone's gone to sleep :-) A new pressure cooker apparently is really expensive, but I found one heavy monster on e-bay which might be as cheap as $22 plus $18 shipping if no-one out-bids me, with a pressure guage. I also found a little one at Goodwill at a much better price but it doesn't have a pressure meter... do I need one? Looks like this, only old and beat-up:

How big is that? You might want a bigger one, like around 17 - 22 quart.

You don't need no pressure guage.

Just a word up on the E-Bay experience. I bid on 4 of them pressure cookers. Thought I was in like Flint each time. Watch out for those snipers. Those are the people that wait till an item has like 20 seconds left and they up your bid by one stinkin' buck. Be careful and be at the helm at closing time. The deals are there but you gotta be on yer' game!! Good luck! I can be fun though!! :-)

My advice is to be patient w/ eBay and it'll pay off. I got a PC for $33 including shipping. The bastard is around 20 quarts! not bad for that price

I think the main reason I got it for that price was that the finishing time was fairly early in the morning. Around 8-9 AM. Most people at that time are going/getting ready for work.

Pretty close. I went back to Goodwill and discovered not 1 but 4 pc's, two with rubber seals and two without. One of the ones without was huge but I didn't see how any actual pressure could build up in a big pot with a loose metal lid, so I bought one of the smaller ones for a whopping $7 -- holds six 1/2 pint jars if I stack them. So, how do I use this thing? Put a little water in the bottom and set it on the stove on high?

If it didn't come with a trivet, you'll have to put a towel in the bottom to elevate the jars. Seal the cooker and high heat it til the stopper jiggles, then turn the heat waaaaay down til the stopper just kind of dances lightely. PC for 45 minutes to an hour.

Use about an inch of water. And either buy a trivet or as suggested, use a small towel or wash cloth.

Thanks :-) I assume a trivet is one of those wire baskets to hold canning jars off of the bottom of a pot... I don't think my little p.c. can afford to get any smaller inside and still fit six jars so I guess I'll just use a cloth.

The trivet is a metal pc that is like a pedistal....It sits in the bottom of the pan and keeps the jars up off the bottom...It has slits in it...Its other purpose is to keep water out of the food, etc......I just got a brand new pressure cooker from a Senior Center they had 2 of them......A Manttra brand not sure on the size.....it holds 5 half pints on the bottom and i can stack another tier of 5 on top. Price was right 30.00 with tax. They still have one if someone needs one.....comes with all the accessories, bells and whisles....send me a message if you want me to try and get it for you....I don't mind helping :) Laterz, Road

while you are waiting for your pressure cooker to arrive, go to kmart or walmart and buy one. return it when you are done with it. or just keep it if it's a good cheap one.

Only a complete weasel would buy something just to use it, and then return it. It's just the same as stealing.
