brown rice whole?

ok this ones not hard im just new at this. When you use brown rice, ive heard that sometimes you have to grid up the rice (in a coffee grinder or whatever) when you grow using canning jars. (see "The Quart Jar Way-Revisited" on this site)

Ive also heard that you dont have to grind them at all.... i was just wondering if theres a difference and which one works better??

Grind them. I've tried it without grinding whole rice and it turned out terrible. The mycelia were thin and spindly, prone to contamination and didn't fruit much since it in essence isn't as fully colonized as it could be.

It's called the 9-er Tek, and there are many variations. A pint jar can colonize in a week.

It's good to grind up about half of the rice so that it has more surface area for the micilium to munch on, but lots of people leave 1/4-1/2 of the rice whole, so there are air pockets in between the grains. If you grind up all of the rice, it can become too compact, and there might not be enough oxygen for mycilial growth.

okay, chances are that what you are looking for is to grind them... so as to follow the pf/mmgg tek...

you can use whole grain brown rice, however, youll need to precook the rice to adequate proportions and youll need a pressure cooker for the sterilization of the rice. otherwise, youll get a nasty mess....

my advice is, grind the rice, but leave a little bit of chunkyness in them. mix with verm and water to the proportions listed in pf tek (fanaticus) and follow that...

after a while, if you really wanna experiment, youll have basic knowledge of what, why, and how...
