Yea I'll be lookin round for some sub's in the north because that would be the only possibe active I would think, I could and will be wrong though. Mabey some gyms might grow but I'm not educated enough to try to identify them. If any one from the metroplex(perferably the western side) has found anything interesting please feel free to PM me or just post it.

I live in the area just north of dfw, Mostly i find inactive pans, some cubes thrown out here and there, and maybe a cope every once in a while.. The best time of year to go hunting, this far north is late may, temps are in the mid to high 80's with lows not breaking 70.. Severe thunderstorm season is on its way if not already started.. There's something magical around this time of year.. Anyway, I also check the local fungus report, found at your local news web site.. When the fungus report is in the 2000's its a good time to go, that is as long as the other weather conditions are met.. Look near the barn yard stables, where they keep the hay its a decent place to find pans and cubes.. But i recently have started cultivating since i have little patience, My Ecuador strain is on its way.. But if i find something ill post it here.. Keep looking all you north Texans.. Its TEXAS your bound to find something.. Happy hunting

Lets set some things straight.
Quote:
Photoguy said:[/b You shall find Cubes, and only cubes, and you are lucky if you find that at all!
You're joking right?
Quote:
Photoguy said:[/b You will find inactive sub's sometimes, but nothing active. Gyms...no even close to likely.
There is no such thing as an inactive subb. these inactives are probably P. foenesicii mistaken as P. subbalteatus. active Gymnopolis species do grow in Texas but i have never found them. I trust the word of notable etheomycologists on that.
Quote:
Photoguy said:[/b Stick to the good ol' cube and hunt away!
A good tip for the newbie shroomers
Quote:
Photoguy said: So please don't just quote things in books. That is far to easy. I like to have proof. Proof is in the hunt, and the photos, and the I.D.
The mycologists who write the books arent just guessing, they know what they are talking about and deserve credibility for their work.

so let me get this strait Photoguy.. Judging from your name, your probably not contradicting yourself.. You will discount what any "pro" would say, and or find.. That is very true.

that is very not true.

Photoguy said: You do nothing but prove my point of people who are more than happy to quote books, but not back it up with hard data and facts from the hunt.... ...Im not here to fight, I am here to help, but FOR GODS SAKES JUST LEAVE THE TEXT BOOK ALONE AND FIND SOME CUBE PATCHS!
Im sorry, you misunderstood my post. I understand that you only want to help, and i wasn't flaming you. No need to defend yourself so agressively. My point was that the people that write the books know what they are talking about because they have found proof. Scientists dont put information in their documents that they can't back up. If it bothers you that much then write some letters or make some phone calls to mycologists in Texas and they will give you accurate info. (or at the least you could send paul staments an e-mail). They can tell you with certainty wether active Gymnopilus spp. grow in Texas.

I live west of austin, and we got that recent crazy rain/hail too. As it gets warmer, I'll be going on a few hunts, and will also post back if I find anything. Since it seems important, I promise to bring a camera.

Wow, that's all good and all, but just find some goddamn mushrooms and spread the fucking love. (sarcasm)
I'm actually not sure what that post has to do with anything, but lyseric is my buddy now. Go hunting. Find mushrooms. Find a field full of gyms and then tell everyone you found 30 pounds and didn't take any photos. Let us see how long that would last.
I really don't care if you find anything. But don't waste your time hunting things that are few and far between.
Good luck with your Texas thread, I'm retiring from this back and forth bullshit yet again. Obviously, everyone in this post is a mycology major at UT. Im just a dumb guy who loves traveling around and finding mushrooms.
I try to put the fire out for you and you turn around and throw the flames on someone else. I am NOT your buddy; my firends respect the opinions and experiences of others, even those who would not respect them in return.

filling those big black Glad trashbags halfway full in a matter of 30 minutes or less wasn't uncommon for me a few years ago. I don't go to the same places as I used to as I don't really need that many pounds of shrooms to enjoy myself now.

Yeah, tons of rain this past week. I checked my area out twice. one day afer rain and the day after that. i may go check again tomorrow. I'm really wondering if they even grow this far west (austin)
News: I went to play some baseball with some friends today and saw these growing in the right outfield. Inactives for sure. Just thought i'd show you there is at least some growth goin on out here. I decided to pick a lot just cuz it was my first actual picking. Why do you guys think these things grow only specially on the baseball field? The thrill of your first mushroom hunt. I'm glad you did not try to ask us if they were pan subs : ) For me, finding in-actives gave me more fuel to find the actives I knew were out... and they are out there

Anyone near the El Paso area? I am originally from Austin, but now reside out here in the West Texas desert.
I come from a small cattle ranch (150 head) in the Pflugerville (Northeast Austin suburb) area. Used to see lots of shrooms, but never really thought about trying to identify them until I got a taste of Morel hunting in WI.
I'm looking to do some hunting and would especially like to find some Morels once the season is upon us.
NOTE: I've had my share of trips too.
OH and hello to everyone (this is my first post on the forum).

Anybody tried the River Legacy Park in Arlington texas. In DFW. It borders the Trinity River and has some old growth forest. During springtime the undergrowth of the woods is packed with moss and mushrooms. I have am going soon to check it out but it is probably too dry. Oh well always next spring.

Sit tight folks.. with the temps about in the 100's AGAIN it will take two to three good days of rain tell anything starts to show, After that if it does not continue to rain the cubes will be gone in less than 7 days... If it continues to rain than you need to hunt about every day! Now we do have a front pushing down tonight and tomorow... so we will have to see. But one day of rain will do no good...
Just my 2 Cents...

I just watched the weather report and Houston has a 30% chance of rain. Plus they're supposed to be showers all week. Looks good in the future.
When's the best time to hunt after rain? 1 day? 2 days? Go the day it rains?

It will take a couple days worth.. I say start looking 2 days after.. But remember 1 inch will not do! It must be a good 2 inch +rain to soak the soil and get them mushies growing!

This is what Ive got so far. i found these beauties in my wood hunting area. I'm about to head to a friends waterside hunting area where a friend found liberties caps last year. I don't know the definite ID on any of these b/c I'm just starting the hobby, but they certainly are gorgeous. but no actives I'm certain.

No pics but i found three fresh cubes in my best field yesterday i could have found a little more but the farmer chased me in his tractor, things are lookin good around the san antonio area lots of rope looking myc all through the poo and many non actives poping up every where,i think a week more of this humid coolness and a little squirt of real rain one more day will kick the spring season off nice.
