Big Texas shrooms, please help ID
    #2683986 - 05/15/04 11:01 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

This is very frustrating. I am almost positive these guys (or girls) are not any type Psilocybe but I would still like to have some sort of id.

Growing out of old rotting hay bales (sp?)

Do not bruse blue. I am doing a spore print right now.

Almost all mushrooms had a vail that was torn away at the stem.

Stems are not hollow.

All had gills but only one had dark gills, the rest are white.

The top of the cap is slighty darker, almost orange but the the edge is white as well as the stem.

My hand is in one picture to give you an idea of size, about six inches tall and four inches across on the big guys/girls.

I will post the spore print in a few hours after things have happened.

If they are just good for salad i would like to know because the smell good. When wet they are smooth.

Texas hunting is very hard for a new guy on the scene, but I am doing my best. Any suggestions would be accepted.

BTW if i am posting wrong please let me know so i do not ummm, upset anyone, this web is a great resource for me and i dont want anyone upset. Thnks.

Those mushrooms are from the genus Agaricus, the same genus as the ones you get from the store.

Agaricus are, unfortunately, difficult to identify accurately to species. You have provided excellent photographs that show most of the details we need to know about. The last photo, showing details of the partial veil (the ring) is very good.

There are a couple more things we need to know. First, the odor. You say they smell good. Do they have a sweet smell (like almond extract), or more of a regular mushroomy smell? Second, we need to know about bruising reactions. Take one and cut it in half vertically. Then use your knife blade to scrape the inside hard enough to bruise the tissue. Watch for color changes. They can occur within a minute or two or they can take up to an hour. Let us know about the color changes you see.

Happy mushrooming!

They smell mushroomy, like when i shop at market street. They do not bruise, so far..

BTW i am the luckiest son of a bitch in Texas, three trips out to find shrooms, three times, i bring back edible mushrooms.

GOOD GRIEF!

Better than killing myself.

BTW do not worry I am not eating these.

Unless you've got a mixed collection, they should all end up with dark chocolate brown spore prints. It may take awhile for the spores to start maturing on the youngest ones.

On the other hand, you also cut the stem bases off when you picked them. I don't think any of those are Amanitas, but you should always make sure you get the entire stem base when you pick mushrooms so you can make sure.

When you scraped one to bruise it, did you scrape nice and hard? The flesh on these is tough enough that you need to scrape it almost hard enough that it would bruise your flesh (if that's what you were scraping). Also, if the specimens are more than 2 hours old sometimes the bruising reactions will be distorted. You might need to get a fresh new specimen to verify the bruising with.

Happy mushrooming!

Spore print time. one has a dark black to brown spore print white the other two have a slighty lighter print but still very dark as you can see.

No bruising at all. Grrrr.

I am pretty sure these are inactive. I need to hire a guide...

That should be possible as long as they are not 100% dried out. Try putting a few drops of water on the caps to rehydrate the mushroom, this will encourage it to drop spores. Also put a bowl or something like that over the cap, this will create a humid environment. Good luck.
