Valerian Root

I read that valerian root is a strong intoxicant in cats. Does it affect cats the same way as catnip? I'd like to spoil my girlfriends cat sometime for kicks, but I just wanted to know how effective it is and what it does to them.

Also, I read that its some stinky stuff. How bad does it smell? I suppose I could let her cat have it outside on the patio, but if does the same thing as catnip, then maybe I'm better off trying to find some fresh catnip.

it does indeed have a very strong odor that get worse the longer you keep it after it's harvested (and if you buy it assume it's been a while since it was harvested). It makes for a very relaxing tea. I kept some in a plastic bag in a drawer and ended up getting rid of it, because the odor permeated the room everytime I opened the drawer and my girlfriend hated it. As far as its effects on cats, I don't have the foggiest.
