WBS
    #3976379 - 03/27/05 03:02 PM (19 years, 5 days ago)

Is it possible to PC WBS before loading it into jars to get water content right, instead of soaking it over night. If so would i just put it in the pc covered in water or would i have to put it in a jar full of water. also how long would it need to PC before proper moisture content is achieved, if it is possible.

thanks
walkingshark

To get water content right, a good simmer is required.

Not according to agar.

I let wbs soak for about 12 hours then decanted and washed. Seems fine so far, just found the first hints of mycelia.

You can have 0% contamination by simply soaking the seed for 12 hrs and then pressure cooking. Promise!

IME WBS clumps with just a soak and a rinse. It turned out better with the soak/rinse then simmer/rinse and then PC

I soaked for 12hr then pc'ed. After the quart jars came out of the pc I gave them a good shake to redistribute the seeds and moisture. The seeds now move about freely.

even after the shake fresh out of the PC, without a simmer/rinse my friend gets clumping out of it when he goes to shake it when its partially colonized. Maybe its just the type of seed that is used oslt.

Aren't there some easy to find OTC anti clumping agents?

WBS isn't all the same. Generaly - it is a mix of millet & milo, with a small percentage of other ingrediants, most often sunflower seeds & sometimes crushed corn. But content varies from brand -to- brand.

Millets refers to a group of annual grasses mainly found in the arid and semiarid regions of the world. Millets belong to 5 genera: Penissetum, Eleusine, Setaria, Panicum and Paspalum. These grasses produce small seeded grains and are often cultivated as cereals.

MILO = Grain Sorghums. These include what we commonly know as kafir, kafir corn, durra, milo, maize, Egyptian corn, African millet, Black Indian millet and pearl millet.

Soak 12/24...even 36 hours. JUST NO SO LONG THAT IT GERMINATES

You can tell when the WBS has absorbed its full moisture capacity, by how much it EXPANDS. Once WBS has expanded 20 - 25 to 30%, it is at FULL CAPACITY

A simple way to judge a SOAKING - is simply fill a container NEAR 3/4 fullof WBS. then fill the container with water.

ONCE THE WBS HAS EXPANDED TO THE POINT IT NEARLY FILLS, OR COMPLETELY FILLS THE CONTAINER....... YOU ARE GOOD TO GO

Some folks add some Coffee to the soak mix, others have added Dextrose, Dry Malt, even manure.

Just plain WBS... is the way I go. I have tried many - many additives. None seemed to create more than a very small degree of faster colonization. Several - screwed the WBS up, to the point it carmalized badly, or was sticky & unshakable.

EDIT SIMMERING Some folks do, other don't. I don't, as my WBS contains its full moisture capacity & all simmering does to it, is make it SOFT & release starch, which can cause it to CLUMP & become difficult to SHAKE after PC'ing. :mad2:

I'm not sure if anyone else has observed this but another very good way to tell if WBS has absoarbed all it can is to take a spoon or whatever you prefer and scoop a grain of WBS out and take one of your finger nails or your spoon and cut it in half, if you look closely you can water depth lines of how far in the grain the water has soaked. if your unsure what i'm talking about just let it soak for a couple hours then break one open. hope that helps someone.

TRUE

old agar uses thumbnail & forefinger test method. Squeeze a grain between thumbnail & forefinger. If it mash's & cuts in half. GOOD TO GO. If still hard - not.
