WBS and gypsum?
    #3972304 - 03/26/05 02:07 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

If one was preparing jars with just WBS should you add gypsum to your mix? I know it is suppose to keep rye from sticking together, but do you need it in straight WBS?

AFOAF is going to soak 24hours and then PC for 45 mins. Shouldn't the gypsum be added to the soak water if needed, and will this kill all contams.

Also, I have searched this forum and found someone who claimed gypsum helps to cut down on contamination, I doubt this, but could it be true?

Gypsum will do nothing to kill contams, but the soak will help to germinate the bacterial endospores that might have otherwise survived the time in your pressure cooker. Gypsum adds calcium and also helps to keep your grains from clumping up. It's a great addition to all grains, including wbs. You are correct, add the gypsum to the soak water. When I make up ten quart jars of grains, I soak the ten cups of grain in 3 1/2 gallons of water with a tablespoon of gypsum mixed in well. Since I personally always presoak the grains in weak coffee, I add 1/4 teaspoon of hydrated lime as well. If you soak in plain water, skip the lime.

Lowes, HomeDepot. Look around the section with concrete. Also, some garden supply stores have it.

i always make sure and add to gypsum to WBS... I never really have any problems w/clumping when using rye, but WBS seems to clump up real bad for me if i don't use it. I always just add a knife tips full to each quart jar and shake it up.
