Yopo + Calcium
    #3969985 - 03/25/05 08:48 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Pardon my lack of chemistry, but I was curious if powdered calcium supplements could be substituted for lime?

Well i have never heard of that but I have heard of people using Gardening Lime to do it, which I do not really recommend due to its caustic nature. I'm not sure how/if it differs from Edible Lime but I wouldn't use it... The Calcium Oxide is the secret to unlocking the yopo snuff as is the ratio used... Generally 1/4 -> 1/3 calcium oxide/powdered+toasted+peeled seeds works.. Expect a nice sinus infection afterwards though. Some natives take Sweet Potato Peels then Powder and Toast them to use in snuff.. This information came to me from an argentine friend of mine, although I have not heard more mention of this nor have I known anyone to try it. I have also heard that using Baking Soda may be used inplace of Cal ox too... good luck and say hello to the Hekula Spirit for me.

Snail shells crushed and burnt to ash, works very well.

I would interested if there was a substitute for lime because I hear it really burns and is just very painful, taking away from the Yopo experience.

hi there salviaengland and enth! long time no see you two! =D
on the subject - sometimes i don't think it's worth 'cutting' the yopo with lime... perhaps only a little bit... if that much! i mean... things are not going to change that much,
with or without...

I think I'll go with the snail shells, as there will be an abundant supply this summer and, well, it's tradional

I attempted this method, calcium, once. It worked, but I can't say how well comparibly to shells or lime. I wasn't too excited to snort a bunch of yopo...so I didn't get quite enough, which made for a threshold experience. I don't know if the calcium contributed to the mildness..

See felix this is where you and I differ because yopo , for me, is completely inneffective without the use of lime. In my experience the more lime, the stronger the experience.... I think that one of the first reports of yopo use, i forget who documented it, is rather funny for suggesting that the seeds play no role in the psychedelic experience but the hallucinogenic properties belonged to the calcined snail shells.

I know that one can smoke Yopo seeds (after they have been crack and simmered), how do the effects compare to when Insufflated? The idea of having an intense burning sensation in my nasal cavity (cavities?) kind of puts me off a little.

enth: i think it was humboldt who said that!
it works fine for me without lime. and many tribes don't use lime either!

theocean: smoking is as effective as snorting but less lasting.
i hate powders in my nostrilis but for yopo i open an exception... and when a good snuff (finely ground, well roasted) is achieved, it leaves no sinus infection, and it does disappear inside oneself (yup, i believe preparation is the hardest part, but where the magic resides).

Calcium supplements contain calcium carbonate usually, or calcium citrate. This won't do because it has to irritate the nasal lining, which it won't. It is too weak.

Calcium carbonate is what is in snail shells. Maybe if you burnt the crushed supplements you would get the caustic calcium oxide you need. Check the label of the supplements to see what form the calcium is in.

hmmmm..  I was just working a post on this very subject for the Emporium...
since snail shells arent abudant here, I did a search of the properties of the shells, then a few sensible replacements..  one seems ideal, and is very easy to come by at all times of the year.. That is egg shells ( washed extra well to make sure the lining is gone of course), is there a reason I am not seeing that makes egg shells unaproperiate?

The main ingrediant in snail shells is the Calcium Carbonate ( CaCo3)

During research i found that egg shells are 95% CaCo3

I dont see why this hasnt been explored more ( at least i havent found it in my intensive google sessions)

Quote:

Snail Shells
a thin outer layer called periostracum made of organic substance called conchiolin (A)

a thicker inner layer called ostracum made of inorganic calcium carbonate.(B)

a inner layer called hypostracum (D)

Egg Shells
The main ingredient in eggshells is calcium carbonate (B) (the same brittle white stuff that chalk, limestone, cave stalactites, sea shells, coral, and pearls are made of). The shell itself is about 95% CaCO3 (which is also the main ingredient in sea shells). The remaining 5% includes calcium phosphate and magnesium carbonate and soluble and insoluble proteins.

Other Info
(B)  calcium carbonate CaCO3
synonyms: marble; aragonite; calcite; pearl; chalk; coral; seashells; eggshell; limestone; white wash; calcamine.

molecular weight: 100.08935

Ksp: 3,84 x 10-9 at 25*C

density: 2700 kg/m to the third

I have just began to search for the chemical comp of the conchiolin & hypostracum ( from snail shells) .

I just found some seeds I had  packed away when I moved...I'll do a hands on test this weekend.  BUT i have an extremely high tolerance to just about everything EXCEPT pharms, so it may not be accurate

I was told sea shells work equally as well. Check out my other post on Virola where I reference too Sublingual administration.
