herbal smoking mixtures
    #3965933 - 03/24/05 07:31 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Found this article of interet.  If you have your own favorite mix, add it to the list!

http://home.teleport.com/~howieb/smoking/smoke8.html

Standard Smoking Mix
Rubbed Mullein leaf as a base
Kinnikinnik leaf, for body, finely broken
Optionally Manzanita leaf and Pipsissewa for added body
Optional flavoring herbs to taste

Another Favorite Mix

Rubbed Mullein leaf as a base
Willow Bark, finely cut for body
Skullcap Leaf, for calming effects
Osha Root, finely ground for flavor

Mix thoroughly. Mildly relaxing

To Quit Smoking

Phase 1

Rubbed Mullein leaf as a base
Kinnikinnik leaf, for body, finely broken
Manzanita leaf, for added body, finely broken
Skullcap Leaf, for vitally needed calming effect
Lobelia, as needed for lobeline
Mint, small amounts for menthol cigarette smokers

Phase 2

Stop adding Lobelia
Add Coltsfoot, as needed, not so strong as to cause coughing fits
Increase the Mullein Leaf

Continue to add more Mullein until Phase 3, Mullein alone.
Expectorant Blend
Rubbed Mullein leaf as a base
Coltsfoot, not so strong as to cause coughing fits
Horehound, not so strong as to cause coughing fits
Flavorings optional

This blend is excellent for a general lung cleanse or chest cold, but do not use when coughing up blood, or if it hurts when you breathe.

Mellow Mixture

Skullcap
Parrot's Beak
Elephants Head to taste

Relaxing, mild and pleasant alternative to Marijuana

Strong Relax

Desert Skullcap
Lobelia - a pinch

This can make you sleepy so do not drive any bulldozers or jumbo jets when smoking.

Too Stoned Blend
Rubbed Mullein Leaf as a base
Calamus Root, small pieces or powder
Elephant's Head Buds, for calming effect and flavor
Coltsfoot, not so strong as to cause coughing fits

This mixture is smoked as an aid to quit a long term Marijuana habit.

Too Expensive Blend
1/2 High Quality Cannabis buds
1/4 Elephant's Head Buds
1/4 Skullcap Leaf

This blend will help with the rising costs of Cannabis. You can substitute the Cannabis buds with any quality Cannabis, and the other herbs will help to stretch it out without diluting its effect.

Ceremonial Smoke

Rubbed Mullein leaf as a base
Fermented Scotch Broom Flowers
Desert Skullcap, just a small amount
Skullcap Leaf
Elephant's Head Leaf
Parrot's Beak Leaf
Osha Root, powdered for flavor

Not an everyday smoke, for vision quests and spiritual pursuits. Use consciously.

From Richard Miller's The Magickal and Ritual Use of Herbs comes this recipe called Yuba Gold:

4 pts skullcap herb
1/2 pts lobelia herb
4 pts passionflower herb
1 pt spearmint leaf

That suonds like an excellent mix, don't come across red willow bark very often though, i'm definately going to try your mix though.  Here's another document that i found a while ago and just remembered having, aside from the numerous spelling errors and the stupid pseudonym, it seems fairly decent:

                            Herbal Smoking Mixtures
                            ====== ======= ==

                                by Phil Osopher

I found this nifty little tidbit in the school library and thought everyone
might like to look it over. It comes from the book 'Mastering Herbalism'.

Here's a rundown on herbs you can use as tobbaco substitutes:

Basic Smoking Herbs
-------------------------
  Bearberry leaves (Uva-ursi)
  Buckbean leaves (Menyanthes trifoliata)
  Chervil leaves (choerophyllum sativum)
  Coltsfoot leaves (Tussilago farfara)
  Corn Silk (Stigneta maidis)
  Dittany leaves (Cunila mariana)
  Eyebright leaves (Euphrasia officinalis)
  Life everlasting leaves (Antennaria dioicia)
  Marjoram leaves (Origanum marjorana)
Mullien leaves (Verbascum thaspus; said to give relief from asthma.)
  Raspberry leaves (Rubus strigosus)
Rosemary leaves (Rosmarinus officinals; mixed w/ coltsfoot to relieve asthma
Sage leaves (Salvia officinalis; said to give relief from asthma.)
  Wood betony leaves (Betonica officinalis)
  Yerba santa (Eriodictyon californicum)

Aromatic Smoking Herbs: try adding any of these herbs and spices to your  herbal tobacco to give it added aroma:
---------------------------------------------------
Allspice berries (spicy aroma)      Licorice root (sweet)
Cascarilla bark (musky)              Melilot flowers (vanilla aroma)
Cubeb berries (spicy aroma)          Sassafras bark (sweet)
Deers tongue leaves (vanilla aroma)  Thyme leaves (incenselike)
Eucalyptus leave (menthol aroma)    Tonka beans (vanilla aroma)
Lavender flowers (very fragrant)    Woodruff leaves (vanilla aroma)

British Herbal Tobacco:
----------------------------
This is a pleasant tasting and aromatic mixture which i can heartily recommend for anyone anxious to find a less noxious substitute for tobacco. It  can be smoked in a pipe or rolled into cigarettes. Pipe smoking, however,  precludes the direct (and harmful) inhalation of saltpeter from the papers.

  16 pt. dried coltsfoot leaves
8 pt. eyebright leaves  (Euphrasia officinalis)
  8 pt. buckbean leaves
  4 pt. wood betony leaves
  2 pt. dried rosemarry leaves
  1.5 pt. dried thyme
  1 pt. dried lavender flowers
  1 pt. rose petals
  1 pt. camomile flowers (optional)

Although they do form part of the recipe, I usually omit the rose and camomile as i find they distract from rather than add to the flavor.
The herbs should be rubbed to a coarse powder through the fingers or the wire mess of a sieve. Make sure they get a good mixxing too. If you prefer a  milder blend, increase the porportion of coltsfoot leaves. Any of the aromatic smoking herbs can, of course also be incorporatd to give your blend extra distinction.

  Intoxicating Smoking Herbs:
-----------------------------------
Finally here is a list of some of the common herbs that are being used today to give herbal tobacco that something extra. Unlike cannabis, all these are legally obtainable (as of the time of this writing), but some of them at  least could be harmful taken to excess. As with all powerful herbs an spices, any good thing can be overdone.

Boldo leaves (rather harsh on the throat)
Broom tops (be careful with these; they can be dangerous)
  Catnip leaves
  Damiana leaves
  Ginseng leaves
Hydrocotyle asiatica minor (stimulant in small doses, but narcotic in large)
Lobelia leaves (herbalists use these in asthma preparations; I wouldnt recommend them because, like broom tops, they can be dangerous.)
  Passionflower leaves
Poppyheads and leaves (if they're whit poppies, then they're opium and very illegal; however, legal red poppies also have a mild effect)
Wild lettuce juice (also known as lettuce opium; need i say more?)
  Yarrow leaves

This concludes this excerpt. I hope it proves useful or interesting to you.

How does your mixture breakdown into parts per herb?  The willow bark contains an aspirin like chemical right? Sacylic(sp?) acid i believe.

Anyone else gotta nice mix they enjoy?

Yes those seem like some good mixtures.
I have been enjoying this mixture for a while now .
Wormwood can be added for an extra Kick of floating effects. But the taste isnt always preffered. And you might want to watch out with adding too many sedating extracts as i have been layed flat out on the floor before.
Good wormwood and wild lettuce opium extracts can be very Potent.  So be careful .

Here are some mixes

Elephants head  ( Pedicularis SP ) Extract
Damiana
Wild lettuce opium Extract
with Peppermint or Spearmint leaves added to flavor .

Wild dagga extract
Wild lettuce opium extract
Blue Lotus Extract
a base of Peppermint or spearmint adds to the aroma of the wild dagga .

This is one we are currently working with
Sacred Lotus Stamen Extract
Petunia Violacea  Shanin resin
Premium MItragyna Speciosa Powder
With some Vanilla  or violet added for a kick of sweet aroma

Wild dagga is sweet and can add alot to a good mixture. Some really like the effects of wild dagga but i find them not quite enough unless in higher concentrated extracts compared to shredded herb foilage .
I even find that a good premium kratom adds alot of effect to blends. I have most of my finds written down but i lost some notes so it looks like i will have to rego some experiences.
