air pump causing contamination?

If I leave my airpump in open air, will it suck in contams an blow them straight onto my shrooms? Is it absolutely neccessary that I make a filter for it, or does it not matter that much?
I'm sure it would be safer to built a filter, but I'm lazy and would rather not, if I can get away with it...

Your jars need to be totally sterile while they're colonizing. Once you birth them, or spawn into a casing, the need for total sterility goes away. There is no need to keep a terrarium sterile, so no problem.
As a side note, I keep tropical fish, and every aquarium pump I've purchased has polyfil stuffed into the intake when I buy it. Not that it matters, but most high end aquarium pumps will deliver filtered air anyway.

okay, cool.
So what are probably the most common conditions that lead to contamination of casings?

The most common cause of contaminants in casings in stale air. Trich and especially cobweb thrive in humid, still, stale air. Keep plenty of fresh air coming into your grow area, and have the air moving constantly if possible. If you're using a rubbermaid type container, an aquarium pump won't really give enough air exchange, so be sure to fan several times a day as well. Drill a few holes in the sides of the terrarium. Also, casings don't need over 80 to 85 percent humidity so no need to have it dripping wet. That also leads to contamination. Good luck. RR

that helps a lot! Now I see why my shit got fucked up!
The pump I'm using says up to 10 gal tanks, and my FC is only 18 quarts. I've got it bubbling with an airstone in H2O2 solution.
I'm gonna fruit this time! I know it!!!
